About Fort Towson Historic Site
Fort Towson Historic Site, established in 1824, played a key role in early American history. It was built to address conflicts between lawless elements, Native American tribes, and settlers claiming Arkansas Territory. The fort served as a border outpost between the U.S. and Mexico, and helped relocate displaced Choctaw and Chickasaw peoples. It was also an important staging area during the Mexican-American War. Today, visitors can explore the original site, which includes the fort ruins, a reconstructed sutler’s store, and the wreck of the steamboat Heroine. The site features a small but informative museum with artifacts and displays, along with a trail leading to various ruins. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and the site offers engaging experiences such as reenactments, cannon fire, and demonstrations about frontier life, foods, trading, and medicine. Visitors of all ages, including school groups, enjoy the historical atmosphere and the chance to learn about this significant part of Oklahoma history.
