I opened a new account and had a 10-day hold put on the check I wrote to transfer funds. I received a letter from Bank of the West 5 days later, making me aware of the hold. The funds had cleared my old bank within 2 days but they still would not release the hold. $175 worth of fees later, I called the branch manager of the MWC branch and explained what happened and that I live on a fixed income and I could not take a hit like this in addition to the fact that it was just wrong. He told me that he would have to talk to his manager and call me back. After a week, I called again and left a message for him. I never heard from him but thankfully there are people at Bank of the West that DO care about their customers. One is Tierre Wells and Iniki at the Contact Center. I had asked for a manager and Iniki asked if I would explain to her about my issue and after I told her, she asked if she could make her supervisor (Tierre) aware of my plight. They treated me with kindness, understanding and genuine concern and when I hung up, I was a very satisfied customer. If this review was about a branch manager not calling me back, I would have put 1 star bc you can't leave zero stars. Based on the two employees who treated me as a valued customer and genuinely took the time to assist me, 5 stars!

They charge you fees if you don't use your account, and then if you move out of state before you fully close your account, they will keep charging you fees, and won't close the account. I've been trying to close this account for months, and now have had the account in the negative, because of the fees. It's ridiculous!! I guess they will have to keep the account in the negative indefinitely if they can't close it remotely. Don't waste your time and money with this bank. Stick with a credit union!

Update: I received my bank card in 3 days so I added stars would have added more if the phone customer service agent wasn't rude and acted like your school principal instead of customer service! If you don't like your job, quit!

I used to think Bank of the West was one of the few banks left that truly valued their customers and practiced lending with integrity. I urge anybody out there thinking of using this bank to research another option. This bank is skilled at preying on their customers through predatory loaning. They do not have the customer's best interest at heart, rather, they will do anything to make more money even if it involves sheer heartache, bankruptcy, or the loss of assets to those who have been loyal to their company for years. If you are savvy in the way of lending and can look out for yourself, this may be the bank for you. If not, look elsewhere, this should not even be a last resort.
