Midnight Mirage: A 1,500-Mile Chase Toward Illusion
I was coming homeâfrom Rio Rancho, New Mexico, back to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The stretch was long, the hours unforgiving. Thirteen hours into my drive, I rolled into a fuel station off I-40 East in Oklahoma. I was exhausted but not ready to settle for just any roadside bed. I craved something serene. Something beautiful.
I pulled out my phone and searched for 4- to 5-star hotels nearby. One stood out like a mirage in the desertârated 9.4, with dreamy images of countryside tranquility and polished suites. It promised peace, elegance, a hidden gem 30.1 miles away. I thought, âWhy not two nights? I could use the break.â
I downloaded Hotels.com, gave them everythingâname, credit card, the whole deal. Locked in the reservation and got back on the road. GPS loaded: 3 hours and 59 minutes to go. Somehow, thirty miles had shape-shifted into a journey nearly as long as the one Iâd just survived. But I was enchanted by the promise.
The drive warped time. âTwo hours left,â said my dashboard. But when what felt like an hour had passed, only 9 minutes had ticked by. Reality blurred. My body pleaded for rest. My mind clung to the photos.
Then came the countdown: âExit in 25 minutes.â I followed. But where I expected rolling hills and quiet views, I found strip malls and stoplights. âTurn right.â
âYou passed your destination.â
Another loop. âYou passed it again.â
Thatâs when it sank in: Iâd been duped. The serene escape? A standard city hotel tucked behind generic signage and fast food joints. The photos had sold a fantasy that didnât exist.
At 2:30 a.m., bleary-eyed and lost in disbelief, I pulled in. The lobby doors were locked. Not a soul in sight. Just the ghost of my expectations. I turned to walk back to my carâand thatâs when I saw two people inside. One slipped behind the desk and tapped something. The door clicked open.
I stepped in, said little. I didnât need luxury anymoreâjust sleep.
Lesson learned: What glows online can lead you far off course. From Rio Rancho to a mirage in Oklahoma, some journeys arenât about where you goâbut what you learn when beauty isnât what it seems.
I hope this helps others make more informed decisions when booking online. Always double-check location details, compare multiple sources, and donât rely solely on photos. A little extra caution upfront can save a lot of confusion down the road.
Safe travels to anyone reading.

EDIT: After speaking with the front desk, we actually were able to extend our stay and we couldn't be happier! We live just down the road, but it's been a nightmare trying to get our electricity repaired and they have been so accommodating with us needing to renew our stay every few days. We've been here almost a week now and we couldn't have made a better choice in hotels. La Quinta will have our family as customers for life!
This is definitely the best hotel my family has stayed at. The rooms are amazing, the beds are insanely comfortable, breakfast is phenomenal, and the staff was wonderful. The guy working the front desk at night is probably the nicest person I've ever met working at a hotel. Everyone here seems to love what they do and you can tell they want the guests to have a good time as well. We would have extended our stay if they had any rooms available!
