this shelter is truly beautiful, the animals are extremely well kept, and the staff are very friendly. I would HIGHLY recommend if anyone is looking to adopt to give GHS a visit.

If you find a pet that steals your heart, don't get your hopes up that "sponsoring" them will improve your chances of meeting them or getting an interview. Also, recognize that their description of "sponsorship" does not involve proof that the money you are donating is going directly to the animal you sponsored. Sadly, I recognize the play on human emotions .. so just proceed with caution if you have your mind and heart set on a specific animal.. I recognize there needs to be a process, but something about this specific process felt off. Please note, I grew up with dogs from various shelters and my family didn't have to jump through these hoops to demonstrate we were suitable owners. Definitely a bit discouraged by the process.

My daughter adopted a 2 yr old female cat - naming her Lucy. The staff at GHS were so attentive and accomodating with the adoption process. A forever home for Lucy - meow

I wish I could give less than zero! I called about about the lost peacock . This organization never answers their phone and they lie. I called repeatedly about the peacock and was told I had to check the website daily, which I did. He was never on the site. and now they're telling me he's been adopted for since Jan 21. They can't even keep their own story straight! I guess someone on your "team" wanted it for themselves. Typical bureaucracy !

The facilities are clean and the fur babies are clearly in good hands. Went to donate this year’s birthday money and my partner topped up the donation by buying slow feeders and a harness from their shop (all new item, many overstock items donated by stores and we were told 100% of the proceeds go to care for the pets). You can even choose what your money is used for (I chose the high priority fund for emergency surgery, meds etc.).

If you're looking for a pet this is obviously your first choice. Best for cost, as well as shortening the unwanted existence of puppy and kitten mills.

The Guelph Humane Society seems to have a careless and reckless disregard for dog adoptions. Late September or early October of 2022 this society had an adoption event. A 41 year old woman who has never owned or cared for a dog attended this event hopping to adopt a dog. She filled out a 3 page questionnaire being very up-front about her lack of knowledge on dog care. She chose an Akita/German Sheppard mix and made it ABUNDANTLY clear to the humane society associate that she has had absolutely no idea of dog ownership. For a first time owner this breed of dog should NOT have been an option for this woman and should have sent red flags up all over the place for the associate but it didn't. The society associate should have rejected this adoption. On top of that this dog has severe separation anxiety and fear/aggression issues that this woman was never made aware of. Did they not vet and evaluate this dog?!!! This humane society allowed the adoption to go through without even a little concern for providing/recommending training for both her and the dog. This likely could have resulted in very dire consequences for this woman due to the negligence of this Guelph Humane Society associate. I have been working with the new owner for the past 2 months after she sought out 2 other trainers who failed to do anything constructive in both her and the dog's training. If you plan to adopt from the Guelph Humane Society be careful, be very, very careful.
