My sister and I just purchased a used car from this location. We had dealings with Carmen. This gentleman and his team were so professional and helpful. Both myself and my sister were so pleased with their service. We would suggest to anyone looking to purchase a vehicle to stop into John Bear on Upper James Street in Hamilton; and ask to speak with Carmen Muraca. This man will treat you well. There are a lot of 1-star reviews for the Parts and Service Department at John Bear in Upper James and I am in complete agreement with them- do not go there for service! Perhaps GM should do a review of them. Most of the 5-star reviews are for Car Sales, not Service.
I am very unsatisfied with my first experience at John Bear on Upper James in Hamilton.
I ended up paying for a part that was put into the car which WAS NOT needed to fix the issue, despite a diagnostic being done only AFTER the wrong part was put in.
I was initially charged over $1100 for a repair that should have been about $250 (for an $87 part plus $150 for one hour of service).
After I escalated it to the Service manager Lori Briscoe, she reduced my bill by $167 for one hour of labour. I then escalated it twice to GM Canada and they offered me a further $167 plus a free oil change, but would not reimburse me for the $466 part they put in which I did NOT need. They kept saying that their policy is, “once a part is put in your car, you have to pay for it”! But I didn’t need that part! GM refused on 2 accounts to reimburse me despite their error- very poor customer service.
I’m also very disappointed with the timeline to fix a minor problem. I brought my car in on a Friday and was told they would get back to me with a labour estimate in a few minutes. After a couple of hours I called back and was told they were “short handed” and hadn’t spoken with the service dept yet. They called a few mins later to say it would be 1hr labour.
An hour later they called to say the part they put in DID NOT fix the problem and NOW I would need a diagnostic to determine the issue. I asked to speak with the service manager Lori, was on hold for 15mins, disconnected, called back, put on hold multiple times, then put back in touch with the service guy again who left a message for me to get a call back from Lori.
I spoke with Lori Friday afternoon and she told me I would have to leave the car over the weekend and have it serviced at 9am Monday morning. I was leaving in a family vacation Monday morning but I was at their mercy. 9am Monday came and went and I had heard nothing. I called and they told me that “they were shorthanded” again and they hadn’t had a chance to check the car yet! When he called back at 10:30 I told him my family had been waiting since 9am to leave so I would have to come and pick the car up on Thursday evening when I got back from vacation.He called me back at 11:36am to ensure me that the car was ready for pick up- not helpful to me once I was an hour away from home. Thus, they ended up having my car for a week!
I have since read that the issue is a common problem for my car’s model, that the part is always under $90 and takes under half an hour to install. Thus I am still owed over $800!
I am frustrated with and disappointed in John Bear Upper James & GM, who make so much profit in car sales and repairs, then rip off their customers by putting parts not needed into their cars!

Long post but I need people to know how this company operates
I was in an abusive relationship and was coerced into financing a vehicle for my ex spouse. First, they ran my credit multiple times when I said I would be a co signer. Did not ask me to run my credit that many times so how I have 4 hard inquiries on my report. 2nd thing is when we went to get the vehicle at the dealership they screwed up the paperwork but the man, Daron, had left when he knew we were coming in that day to finish the paperwork. When I was there I was told only my name would be on the paperwork to finance but I did not agree to be the full loan holder I only agreed to be a co signer and they went with what my ex partner said and did not get an okay from me on the phone or email to be the only one on the finance paperwork and still went ahead and added my ex’a name to the ownership of the car when his name wasn’t even on the loan, only mine. I would be the one responsible for the payments. Which I did not agree with but they said we can sign it and fix it later. Fast forward a month my ex was arrested for domestic violence against me and I told the dealership my horrible situation and experience with them adding his name to my vehicle loan when he isn’t on the loan at all and they refuse to fix the issue. I spoke with service Ontario and they agreed it’s the dealerships mistake adding someone who isn’t on the paperwork for the loan of the vehicle and they just fix it. I emailed many times and waited patiently and just to have no help or anything being resolved ed although they made this mistake and acknowledged they made an error but are refusing to fix their mistake. Now my ex is in jail, I’m stuck with a $20,000 loan of a vehicle I cannot drive and cannot sell to pay the loan off, all because they put his name on the ownership of the car when they shouldn’t have and will not correct their mistake. I am a single mother of two kids, and I was manipulated and coerced into this by my ex and the dealership made such a big mistake to add him to the ownership and admitted they made a mistake but will not fix it for me. Horrible experience with this dealership from the very jump and I am now stuck with a vehicle on my credit I cannot trade or sell because of a mistake they made and won’t fix. Highly disappointed and stressed out. Clearly this company just wants money and doesn’t care about their customers to take responsibility for their mistakes and rectify them accordingly.

Excellent customer service. It took time to deliver the vehicle, but the dealership kept me updated all the time. Once it arrived, everything went nice and smoothly.
