About Martyrs' Shrine
Martyrs’ Shrine in Canada is a historic and peaceful site dedicated to honoring the lives of the Canadian Martyrs. Located just outside Midland, Ontario, in the Heart of Georgian Bay, it is a place of prayer, reflection, and history. The Shrine celebrates nearly 400 years of story and faith, highlighting the love and sacrifice of Jesuit missionaries and their companions who lived and died there in the lands of the Wendat (Huron). Visitors from around the world come for prayer, healing, and fellowship, with over 100,000 people each year. The Shrine’s architecture is notable, with a design that resembles a birch bark canoe and beautiful woodwork inside, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The grounds are extensive, featuring grottos, stations of the cross, and five gardens, making it a perfect place for reflection and appreciation of nature. The interior houses relics, including the skull of St. Jean de Brebeuf, and the renovated stations of the cross offer a peaceful setting for prayer. Visitors also enjoy the onsite bistro, which offers delicious food like pizza and a friendly atmosphere. The gift shop provides meaningful religious items at fair prices. Entrance is modestly fee-based, supporting maintenance and renovations. Overall, Martyrs’ Shrine is a grand, serene, and well-maintained site that combines history, faith, and natural beauty, making it a meaningful destination for all who visit.
