We’ve been sleeping long enough now on our Obasan mattress that I can leave a review. It’s wonderful. There is a reason these mattresses are used at the most luxurious hotels, like the Fogo Island Inn.
1. A financially conscious decision: This is the last mattress you will ever buy, so the cost comes out to far, far less than you would pay to keep replacing yours every 5-7 years (our last, very high end Serta which had a similar cost, lasted only 7 years). It is a component mattress. This means that inside the zip up mattress encasement are latex squares. When, for instance, the square at your hips begins to sag in about 10 years or so, you simply move one or both at your feet into that spot. When you need replacements, you only buy the replacement component at $250, not the whole bed.
2. An environmentally conscious decision: It’s made of organic cotton, wool, and latex. There is no off-gassing. The feel is magnificent. Because of the component replacements, you are not creating more mattress waste every 5-7 years. The impact is less on you and the environment.
3. A comfort conscious decision: You set the components to your particular needs. I like a softer bed and am a side sleeper, so I have a soft component where my shoulders are and medium at the hips. If you want it even softer—while getting the proper support—you can get a softer base layer on one side. My partner is a side sleeper, too, but likes a bed that is very firm. He has a medium at his shoulders and firm at his hips with a firm base. Then you can get a luxurious 2 or 4 inch latex and wool topper. Another benefit, because of the separate components and the way latex works, you do not wake as your partner moves during the night.
4. A customer care conscious decision: When you are interested, if you are not near a store, you do a zoom call and they walk you through everything. No hurry. When you take delivery, a team comes to the house with the bed and builds it for you and shows you how to turn over the components (the topper is turned every month. The components are turned every 6 months. They are lovely people and take their time with you.
4a. It’s a small Canadian business that treats its employees well. They do have showrooms on the north east-coast of the US in all the big cities, but its main locations are here. I’m always here for small businesses making quality pieces that do not have to be thrown out.
In sum, this is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I put it right up there with buying our Prius. Except the luxury. This is more like the Volvo of beds. If you need a new bed, you won’t come complaining to me if you buy it.

We have been buying Obasan products (beds, headboard, duvets, mattress protectors, both decorative and sleeping pillows made of either wool or shredded rubber) for nearly 20 years now.
Obasan is a company that is truly conscientious who cares about quality, wellness and their customers. They have always gone the extra mile to ensure complete satisfaction. The care you will receive is of the highest caliber.

I purchased a mattress and several associated items from Obasan prior to a recent move to Nova Scotia and have now had almost four weeks of experience with the sleep system, which is excellent. The customer service experience was likewise first-rate, from my initial in-store consult to the final delivery of the items and even beyond. A big thank you to all involved.

I also believe that buying Canadian, handmade goods is essential and reflects an appreciation for smaller industries that need our support as customers.

After washing my previous big brand mattress cover, I was horrified to find tiny pieces of plastic all over my washer, mattress, bedding and home. I made the switch to Obasan and after a few months with it we’re really pleased. It’s well made and washes well. Definitely a big upgrade!

We meant to write sooner but just wanted to thank Obasan for their excellent service and thoughtful consideration of our sleep needs.
We absolutely adore our California King mattress and pillows. We have not had any difficulties in the adaptation. It is such a privilege to have such a luxurious mattress. We do not take that for granted.
This was our third purchase with Obasan. We purchased our two daughters' first mattresses as toddlers and these are still so so comfortable!! Our girls love them!!
Obasan is definitely an investment worth making!

When I first bought my Obasan mattress, I was weary about the investment. But it’s been a few years now and I don’t regret the purchase one little bit. I have a number of musculoskeletal and arthritic issues and I now rarely wake up in the pain I used to feel on my previous mattresses. The organic fabrics also make a difference - when I sleep, I love knowing that my mattress isn’t off gassing. I’ve moved my mattress twice now, and while it can be tricky, the folks at Obasan have helped make it easy as pie every single time. Lastly, on top of being a fantastic product that’s tailored to my needs and it can be adapted to my future needs, it has been such a pleasure working with the local crew in Ottawa, supporting an Ottawa business.

The attention to detail and personalization from the staff at Obasan (specifically Darlie John Almuete) is top notch. He listened to our needs and helped us select the best mattress for us. Obasan is the type of company you’ll want to go back to; their environmental considerations and special touches are hard to find and they embody excellence. Highly recommend!

We got a crib-sized organic mattress for our toddler’s bed a few months ago. It was really important to me to have a non-toxic mattress and I love the materials Obasan uses. The mattress is very firm but comfortable for kids (and an adult curled up beside their child)! It seems like it will hold up really well over time which is a relief considering the price tag!
The mattress we received was actually wider than the dimensions listed online by an inch. Thankfully Obasan contacted me to send photos of the problem and then generously provided a new mattress that was the correct size. We are very impressed with the quality of their customer service and are happy to recommend them!

Why is there no option for infinity stars?
Because that’s what this product deserves.
We have been sleeping under this dreamy duvet for 3 months. It is cozy, comfortable, perfectly weighted perfection! It keeps us at an ideal sleep temperature, even during this stifling Ontario summer.
It is so well made, you can feel the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. I use the corner loops as anchors, tying the duvet cover corners onto them so there is no shifting or bunching in the cover.
This piece is an investment, as are all of Obasan’s products, but you really do get what you pay for. When we needed a duvet for our guest room, there was no hesitation - this was also our choice for our guests (and dog, who has claimed that room as her own) too!

Showroom is well stocked with all products and what a pleasure to deal with experienced, knowledgeable staff. Darlie John not only knew their products inside and out, but also any answers to sleep issues or questions. He seems to know immediately what you need, and he was right! The bed set up is the best we’ve ever had, so comfortable and I don’t struggle with sleep any more at all. Add to that the excellent customer service and staff. We had a few glitches that were taken care of immediately and their resolve was above and beyond what I expected. Honestly, in today’s age where businesses don’t even phone you back, this company excels at making sure their clients are happy. I don’t know which is better, the product or the company, but together it is a winning combination. I urge you to visit them, you will NOT be disappointed. I don’t write reviews but this time I felt it was worth it!

Was totally overwhelmed by buying a pillow without trying it. But I found memory foam made me hot and feather squished too much. After doing a video call with the Obasan guy who seemed so certain that he could recommend one that would be supportive for me as a side sleeper, with the option too add to retract stuffing.. and that it wouldn’t run hot nor would squish flat.. I went for it (found a discount online, maybe for Father’s Day). Pillow arrived and I LOVE IT. Honestly. Their advice was spot on. It’s been great. I thought I’d need to add stuffing so they sent extra but in the end I’ve actually taken some out. The engraving was a cute bonus. And being Canadian and organic was a sort of non negotiable. My chiropractor was also impressed when I showed it to him.
I actually learnt of the brand when I stayed at a boutique hotel in California that used Obasan mattress covers and it was very comfy and organic so it was in my mind when I noticed the brand in my pillow research.
About me- Likes firmer pillows, average sized woman’s side sleeper with a bit of back sleeping. Also fyi I gain nothing from leaving this review! Enjoy!

I have nothing but great things to say about Obasan staff and products. We have been customers of theirs for several years having bought bedding, pillows and mattresses and have been very happy with the experience and customization of their beds. No other mattress comes close to comfort, support and quality. Please bring back the velour fitted bed sheet :)
