CAVEAT: This review was from 12 years ago, when it was still Gervais. It's probably changed a lot since then. All the negative reviews seem to be since the takeover/name change as I doubt the original Gervais guys are involved at all anymore, so take my (and any other review more than a year old) with a grain of salt.
On your first visit, you may find it difficult to find what you're looking for but the staff are EXTREMELY knowledgeable and friendly. You can almost always find anything you're looking for -- they even have integrated circuits (ICs). Anything they don't have they can order for you -- usually at a reasonable price. However, if something seems out of your price range, check eBay, as you can usually order the parts directly from China, at a big discount. The downside is you have toy wait 3-5 weeks usually.
Gervais is a great shop for students or 20 year electronics engineers!

ONE AND ONLY electronic component store in ottawa as far as I know. these are a rarity nowadays. admittedly I will not go here very often and I will take it for granted, but this store has 543219 bits and bobs for component level repairs, electronic hobby projects and lots of fairly old but reliable parts. the staff are nice enough. I hope this place stays open for the next ten thousand million years so that eventually when I need one specific transistor/switch/diode/thingamajig I'll be able to get it as fast as I am able to drive to the store, find it hanging on a wall, and pay for it.

To the owner: What can you offer that I can't get from Amazon? Service and expertise.... If you aren't willing to offer those to your customers when they come in with questions, why bother stay open. You should seriously vet your employees to make sure they aren't sinking your business. The lump that was holding down your desk today actually told me I should get what I was asking about on amazon. It was painfully obvious he didn't have any time for me.
I've been in the store several other times over the years and found staff to be quite helpful. I'll have a hard time coming back after today.

Heatpress switch broke in the middle of a job. Employee at the counter found the exact part and I was in and out in less than 2 minutes. Great price, great service. Recommended!

I went there because people in other reviews mentioned that they give tips. Not so. Or maybe no longer. I drove 20 min each way to ask about rewiring a headlamp. No help whatsoever. Looks like it's nothing more than a retail store at this point.

It's merged with Active Tech and is seriously a great place to have in the city for any hobbyist or really anyone who's looking for some random little electronics components, heat shrink, wire, or soldering stuff. Nice to be able to take a look in person to make sure something is the right size or whatever rather than buying online.The staff are also super friendly and happy to help you with whatever you need.Great place.
