Sorry to say I will no longer be shopping at Giant Tiger. Today I visited my local Giant Tiger and discovered the self-serve checkout is permanently closed as of today. I am someone who actually appreciates the self-serve checkout as I am slow with my groceries and paying because of an injury. I don't appreciate people pushing behind me which is what always happens in a lineup, and don't want to stand in a lineup as the self checkout proved is unnecessary.
Now instead of having the option of having eight people able to check out at the same time, there will only be three cashiers available at any one time. There was a lineup today when I went to pay and it was at 3:15 on a Wednesday.
Good luck with your new plan. I seriously doubt it will do anything to stop shoplifting. But I for one will no longer be a customer.

Poor selection of food items and at least a 20 minute wait in line every single time. Poorly run.

I don’t understand why they have self-check out closed. Service at this location is comparable to going to any government Service Ontario location. They have 3-4 people stocking shelves meanwhile, not enough people at cash. Staff don’t look happy. Shopping carts piled up at the front door. I like the prices, that’s my only positive review at this location.

VERY GOOD COURTEOUS AND HELPFUL AND I LOVE THE PRODUCTS THEY HAVE. I LOVE SHOPPING THERE AND FIND MUCH MORE THAN I WAS LOOKING FOR. WHIS WE HAD ONE IN PORT COLBORNE.

There are two staff there that are absolutely rude. Twice now I have gone in looking at clothing and the staff member with the short blonde hair has walked right in front of me and moved the items I was looking at. Today she even discouraged me from buying the out fit I was looking at. You think they would encourage you to buy, considering profit pays their wages and keeps them employed. Another time I was looking at solar light that just came in. The one with the short red hair told me off for going around the boxes to get it. The point is, it was in the shelf and I purchased it. I shopped a lot at the Welland location but seems they don’t want my business. Fine, the Giant Tiger in Fonthill has amazing staff and really friendly.

Cashiers slower than molasses, stop chit chatting amongst yourselves at checkout. Didn’t even say 3 words to me but was in a full blown, unnecessary conversation with the other worker, who was standing up there on her phone.

Welland GT has rude cashiers. They do not pack, they put your groceries right next to your bag standing up there and if you say anything they swear they pack every time. As a senior any help is appreciated and I don't appreciate being told that she puts it in our bags EVERY time when she wasn't. Like everywhere else GT prices are creeping up so it would be nice to get decent service for our purchase. Customer service is poor in this store.

Overall, has not been a bad store but a few years back, they eliminated most of the cashiers to replace them with self-checkout machines. Not a great move - there always seemed to be a long line-up at the remaining cashier, but, reluctantly, I started using these self-checkouts. Eventually I got over my dislike of them and they provided a quick way to skip the line.
Now, they have closed the self-checkouts. I was in there today and there was an epic lineup that I simply could not be bothered waiting for. I was only buying a few food items and it was quicker (and for most items, cheaper) to zip down to Food Basics, about a 3-minute drive further down the road. Giant Tiger made a bad move some years ago, and have made it even worse now, so I'm finished with them.
