Unprofessional and unethical behavior from a Fidelity employee
I want to start by saying thank you to two Fidelity employees who treated my mom and me with genuine kindness. The woman who helped process my mom’s POA was incredibly friendly and professional. The thinner gentleman who works in the afternoons is also polite, helpful, and easy to talk to. They both deserve five stars.
That said, our experience with another employee, specifically the heavier-set man at the same office, was completely different. His attitude was cold from the start, even though I was respectful and polite as always. What happened next was surprising and frankly unacceptable.
My mom made me her POA at Fidelity after watching how well I’ve done managing my own investments and running my business. I shared everything openly during the POA process, including my company information. We chose Fidelity because it’s a user-friendly platform. I have an old Fidelity account with a penny in it, but I stopped using Fidelity a long time ago. I only use E*TRADE now for its flexibility.
On our visit, my mom needed help resetting her login. After the friendly staff helped her, I pointed out how her portfolio had recovered nicely even with the recent tariffs. At that point, the larger gentleman gave us a very noticeable look of disappointment. He seemed irritated that the account was up. I had seen him more upbeat in the past when the account was down. It was clear he never took the time to understand the underlying asset, which has outperformed the market for over a decade and looks even better technically going forward.
As I was explaining the wheel strategy to my mom, he walked over and, out of nowhere, said in a negative tone, “Why don’t you trade on your own account?” It was condescending and clearly meant to insult me because he had seen my Fidelity account with one cent in it. That comment was uncalled for and completely unprofessional.
I’ve outperformed the market year after year, up over 400 percent since October 2023. I’ve also insured my mom’s retirement account and even gifted her the maximum allowed under the tax-free family gift limit. That’s why she trusted me with POA. For a Fidelity employee to speak to me that way in front of her was extremely inappropriate and left us both uncomfortable. We left right after.
This kind of behavior reflects poorly on Fidelity. It’s unacceptable for any employee to insult or judge clients, especially based on a superficial understanding of their finances. After looking into it, I also noticed that this same individual has received multiple one-star reviews for similar behavior. Clearly this is not the first time. Hopefully Fidelity management takes this seriously and does something to remedy the problem.

The gentleman who assissted me was patronizing throughout the process of unlocking my account. He showed a general disinterest in helping me by leaving before I was fully back into the account.

Under Wonderful New Management, I have been impressed with their professionalism, knowledge, and courtesy. This is far different from the constant turnover of personnel and poor service at their Portland office before it closed. As a patron for the past 17 years, I can attest to this marked improvement. This is the best Fidelity office experience that I have ever had; they are very courteous and extremely helpful at this new Cedar Hills Fidelity Office.

I recently had a financial planner consultation with Grant Stephenson which left me appalled in his terrible customer service. He behaved rudely, was condescending and just made me feel completely uncomfortable from the very get-go. He actually laughed and found it entertaining when I mentioned that I was considering owning a small business. He then provided me with non-thoughtout advice of owning rental investment properties where, once doing the math, the numbers didn't add up where it would actually cost me money every month, rather than pull any sort of profit or monthly income. And apparently he's a VP? VP of what, turning people away from investing anything, including their time, with Fidelity?
