This happened late at night—around 1:00 a.m. on a cold, dark, rainy Sunday—in a remote, wooded area of Oregon. To make matters worse, I was already about 100 miles north in Eugene with my wife and our two young children, while my son was stranded alone.

In a situation like that, stress levels are high and options are limited. I started calling towing companies and was shocked by what I was quoted. One company asked $385 just to tow the vehicle about 10 miles to the nearest town, Canyonville, and said it could take one to two hours to arrive. Another company quoted an unbelievable $1,800.
