I've been going to Smith Fam Bookstore since the 90s, have countless books I've purchased there. I had been talking up the place to my partner, we hadn't ventured out much due to pandemic and some family things.Recently we went in, were told we couldn't carry around our coffees. Had to leave them on a tiny TV tray by the door. Honestly, pretty ridiculous. We turned around and left... that's fine, they can have whatever policy they want, but my partner simply won't return there. The employee seemed annoyed that we'd want to bring coffee in... to me, walking around downtown w a coffee and going in places, seems pretty standard.I've read lots of reviews here about the grumpy customer service. That was the case this time and has been my experience in the past. I've given the benefit of the doubt many times, but it's been years and it hasn't gotten better. My view, many of the employees just seem burned out. While I have loved the store, it's just not a welcoming place anymore. That sucks because I want to support local and I have nostalgia there. But especially when paying premium prices for books, I need it to feel good when I walk in the door.

Best bookstore I have been to in eugene (Tsunami is great too) this place has the biggest selection of both new and used. They even have an upstairs area. They don't allow bags in, which I don't care about. The staff isn't the friendliest per say, but it doesn't bother me, they keep to themselves and if u need something they r happy to help.

I just found Smith Family Bookstore today after living in Eugene for 6 years. Didn’t have any time to wander but I did find 1 good book to read. Had a lovely chat with the woman at the register and definitely will go back when I have more time! What a wonderful find!

I have been to dozens of bookstores and this place is definitely a top ten American bookstore. Two stories, meticulously organized, breadth and depth, serious deep cuts, and a friendly staff.

We found books here that were a quarter of the price at barnes and noble. Stayed in here for hours and came out with a treasure trove of good books. What highly recommended place to anyone in the staff is extremely helpful

Huge selection of used and new books here, and everything is very well organized. I'd say it's second only to Powell's in Portland for its size and variety.

They have a lot of great books, but the prices of their used books are outrageous! I will never buy from them.

My least favorite bookstore anywhere across the U S of A. Poor selection, poor attitude from the three people that had to deal with me... I don't like it. What I mean by deal with - answering one easy question, and taking my money. Never coming back here.

Very big place filled with neat, well placed, & organized books. If you're a fantasy and sci-fi fan, go all the way to the back. The interior was well spaced and bright. You are not bothered while you roam from row to row of books. There is a parking for customers, for free on the side of the Smith Family Building.

This place was incredible. I spent about an hour quick prowling some of the first floor shelves. I could have spent another 2 hours there.Large collection of both old and new books with the latter having a 10% discount from cover price.

Can't review on Google, so trust this one more. I just went to Smith's for the first time yesterday and have nevver had a more sour vibe in a book store. Tsunami Books is best for local! You walk in and fell judged and a weird tension between and from the staff. After putting have the books back I would have purchased, I walked out and started talking to a disabled brother asking his story. The Smith's worker came out just to kick him away from the store accusing him of panhandling. Smith's isn't really in a high-traffic area. AND I began the conversation. I tried to explain that we're conversing and he didn't care. I wish I had given him the money and not Smith's. Just check out their google reviews. I'm not alone at experiencing the ahole staff.

I love this store for their selection of books and wide array of different used and new books. You can easily find needed books for school/university at a discounted price if used. The people are very kind and helpful in pointing you in the right direction.
