Before hiring Baker & Colson I specifically asked for an estimate, and was very clear about my tax situation - which was not complicated. I was told it would be $300-$500 for preparing my taxes. Instead I received a bill for over $750. Including a $250 client set up fee, and being billed $168 for dropping off my paper work and saying hello to Cathy the accountant I was working with. I couldn't believe the lack of transparency, the mis-set expectations, and then the managing partners unwillingness to drop the $168 for a meeting to DROP OFF RECEIPTS.
Ridiculous. I strongly recommend against using this accountant.

My US Tax preparer CPA in Canada - Israel Wasserman used Baker & Colson about 5 years ago to file my taxes, unbeknownst to me. At the beginning of my using Israel he committed to covering any late penalties due to him filing late. Year 1 he filed late and did cover penalties ( but what tax filer wants a black mark next to their name). Year 2, Israel again filed everything late ( even with me sending him reminders and his staff complaining about his tardiness) - second year late filing resulted in big penalties. However, Israel changed his mind about paying penalties for filing late cause it was more, not very professional. Confronted him appropriately however, he was intransigent - so let him go. Through this confronting Israel I was advised he farmed the work out to Baker & Colson to actual do my taxes. Can only conclude they were all at fault for filing late and then not taking accountability! I actually never had any direct contact with B&C . Now some 5 years later I get an invoice from B&C sent to my home for some other client for work done in Dec 2023. Unfortunate to see their organizational ability and capacity to get things right remain in question.COMMENT ADDED Jan 22- in view of firms response : I appreciate your taking my comments serious enough to offer a response. 2 comments :1) You are correct, I did not talk/engage with your firm directly - are you saying that Israel Wasserman provided my documentation to you in a tardy fashion? 2) As to your comment about sending invoices to my home for another client of yours with the same last name as me, you are quite confused! I do know who resides at my home, only my wife and I. Perhaps I should take a closer look around my basement, or alternatively admit your firm is making a mistake and correct it - viola!!!

Baker and Colson has provided me with great advice and excellent tax filing services in an increasing complex environment. I have been using them for over 10 years for returns and they have always been fast and efficient. Thank you for helping me navigate the multilayered tax structure of Multnomah County.

Once upon a time, I was a satisfied Baker & Colson client, for a span of almost 15 years. Mark Horstmann was my tax accountant, and his personal touch, competitive rates, and genuine interest in his clients caused me to retain his services. Unfortunately, he retired two years ago, and I was transferred to a new accountant, Austin Foteff, who I have still never met. In a heartbeat, my tax preparation bill went up from around $500 to $1530 even though very little changed with my tax situation.$1530.Yes, I know inflation is causing the price of everything to go up. But not 306%.The last straw? Austin charged me an additional $159 just to re-email me three existing forms. It's just sad to see a desire to treat customers fairly and well be replaced with a desire to nickel and dime them, and squeeze every last penny possible out of them. Sad to see profits take precedence over people. At least, with prices like that, Baker & Colson should be able to afford something better than their dingy strip mall offices on the edge of Gresham, assuming they don't lose the remainder of their clients due to exorbitant bills such as these.Needless to say, you should look elsewhere for your accounting and tax preparation needs.

I will never use Baker & Colton again. The first year I used them, I thought they were good and reasonably priced. This year my taxes cost well over $500 and I was even charged $50 to speak to someone on the phone. I don’t get anything above the standard deduction!I wouldn’t recommend them. If you do use them, I highly suggest that you have them disclose ALL the fees upfront so you don’t end up in a siMilar situation.

I have turned to Baker & Colson at least 3 times in the past 11 years seeking financial advice regarding potential tax consequences that I needed to be aware of in several different financial arenas. The tax consultants who helped me to make an informed decision regarding my own tax situations went up and beyond my wildest expectations. They were both professional and knowledgeable and left me feeling quite grateful that I had utilized their services. I would highly recommend this company and the upstanding employees who represent them.

Keven Steege has always done a great job on my business & personal taxes and also for everyone that I've referred to him. His past work in research gives him a leg up, as he knows many "ins and outs" that others don't. I refer him frequently to my clients and advise you to give him a try yourself. Baker & Colson has a great reputation and has been in business for many years.
