Went in to support the shop a bit on small business/Black Friday weekend. I’ve been into the store about 4 times in the last couple of months (buying stuff each time), and the owner (who is very well-liked and who seems like a great guy) is never there when I am. Not a problem, per se, but I mention it because this last time I bought some vhs from his very large selection (of hundreds), 8 in total. 4 had price tags ($2, $1, $6, $5) amounting to $14. The other 4 had no prices on them. I went to check out and the young employee said “let me ask my boss” and texted the owner a picture of the stack, and a few minutes later quoted me an improvised total of $50.
That really didn’t sit right with me after I got home; these were not rare or in primo condition— there were even multiple copies of one of them. I was not offered or given an itemized receipt of any kind, so I called and asked how 4 old movies could cost $36, and I was told that the owner looked up “Sold” prices on eBay from wherever he was. If he were in the store, I highly doubt he would have pulled up eBay right in front of me and I feel like I would have received a more reasonable price.
That all felt unethical to me. At the very least, distasteful. I understand having so much product that you can’t price all of it all the time, but this feels like predatory surge pricing. Also very curious that the priced movies in my stack topped out $6 with an average price of $3.50 each, but the other 4 without stickers were magically $8/each. That’s just not how retail works; there’s a price for a good or service, and we as customers get to decide if we share that value, and then we can make an informed decision. Here, I was put in a position to have to make a decision at the register very quickly (there was at least one person waiting behind me) with an employee who had to ask how much a regular, non-specialty items cost, so he wasn’t empowered to quote me a reasonable price on the spot. One of the overpriced tapes didn’t even work. I might as well just buy from eBay next time, because at least then I can find the best quality version and compare it to other options and it’ll be shipped right to my door. And there’s 3rd party help if an item is faulty, instead of this more improvised setup. I think the offense was compounded by the fact that I’d just bought some better quality vhs across the street for better prices that were actually marked— nobody had to text off-site or make up a price.
In the end of the day, I walked into this store that I really like, excited to do my part to support a local small business on a big shopping weekend, and I left feeling like I kinda got ripped off, not because of a misunderstanding or a mistake, but because of a deliberate, totally avoidable, distasteful business practice on the part of the owner. Your mileage may vary, but I think I’ll just stick to eBay if that’s how he’s gonna do it. Very disappointing.

I came in here a couple weeks ago with one of my clients who was looking for some basketball cards. The owner gifted him the 1987 Portland Blazers lineup. Y'all. It made my client's day! He was so, so happy. He is still talking about it.
This is a wonderful little shop in a very sweet part of town. Support small businesses this this one! The owner goes out of his way to make his customers feel welcome and appreciated. Thank you so much!

Stopped in to the store for the first time today with my daughter. After asking to buy a small toy, the owner overheard my daughter talking about Pokémon. He then proceeded to give her a bunch of free cards and a box to go with them. It absolutely made her day and was incredibly kind. Great selection here as well, for reasonable prices. We will definitely be returning!

Turned an “1a auditor” stupidity into a ad for the business, one of the most American things I’ve seen. Shop looks clean and guy seems friendly, funny and stands his ground. Luv from Australia 🇦🇺🦘🐨
