“7 out of 5 stars, easily, maybe more. If you're lucky enough to be within 100 miles of this shop, make it your go-to bike shop.
What an amazing place and pair of owners. I brought my bike in because she was making a clicking sound, and I had a sneaking suspicion it was a worn out bottom bracket. I was also feeling incredibly ill and thinking of pausing my bike tour.
I will add that this isn't the first time I've come through here—I've done several tours of the coast, and each time I've needed a bike shop this is where I've ended up. I would rather bring my bike here than any other shop I've ever been to, across five countries and three continents.
When I was having issues on my coastal ride, I was so relieved that I could bring my bike here and knew I'd get what I needed.
Joe, one of the co-owners of the shop, is a master of his craft. Not only did he replace my bottom bracket (for a surprisingly reasonable price), he also fixed a bent hanger, resolved a long-standing issue with my front derailleur (I couldn't even use it), and adjusted my limiters. He's not quick with a smile, but he is extremely warm of heart, and is training the next generation of bike mechanics as he goes. He has also done a lot of touring, so he knows what a person on a bike needs to get anywhere they want to go.
As I waited, I felt worse and worse, and decided to see if I could find a taxi to deliver me an hour's drive south.
Matt, the other owner of Bike Newport, overheard my conversation with my partner while trying to sort out the logistics of getting to Florence.
Without hesitation, he offered us a ride, went home to get a bike rack that would be better suited to our bikes than the one he had with him, loaded my bike and bags for us, and drove us a little over an hour to Florence, stopping along the way so I could throw up. Genuinely a champion.
Matt, Joe, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You are both absolute gems. ❤️”
