Not so great experience. This is very remote and about an hour from Hwy 101. The road is gravel after the hatchery. The road was pretty dangerous and with falling rocks and was not maintained. We had to get out and move a few smaller boulders so we could drive past. There were some campers that looked like they've been there for months. Maybe homeless or just camping for an extended period. I'm not sure. There is no drinking water and only vault toilets. There were mosquitoes everywhere and nothing seemed to help. When we went, all of the sites were taken except for one that did not have easy river access. You have to hike down a rocky path so it is not great for kids or older adults. The river is pretty and the sites are free but they fill up quickly. You'd be better off going to someplace that can be reserved.

OMG! This place was wonderful!!! Such a great river, spots are nice size and offer privacy. Clean bathroom. Woke up being 50 here, can't think of a better place to do such a thing. Bonus, there's always heart shaped rocks here..... always. Enjoy!

Stock up in town on your way in. The site is remote, but very safe. Locals travel much further into the forest than that. The best times are what many would call the "Off Season" The beautiful old growth valleys really come to life when a few light rains are in the forecast. BE ADVISED there are several active gold claims in the area. Stay out signs mean just that. They mean everyone, even you. And yes, yes the would mind very much even if it was to take a pic of a flower. Stay out of the gold claims and off the cliffs. Beyond that play nicely and take your damn garbage out with you.

Stayed here one night in the off season it was fine if abandoned, a pretty remote place and it's a bit too creepy if you are alone and not a local imo. I was the only camper there.Vault toilets are not too bad, womens better than mens for sure which has a broken lock on it. Has an old water pump of some kind but no handle to use must be for rangers only. Never saw a ranger at all in the few days I did camp off elk river road in various places in the off season, some nice pullouts scattered up and down the road. Very few cars during the weekdays so a good secluded free primitive camping place. I never had any problems with bears or other humans but always be prepared. River is gorgeous blue and clear and this campground has nice easy access to some pools, can be accessed without 4wd car unlike other places. Paved road can get rough once you get past the fish hatchery with uneven surface, rock slides etc but not too much for non 4wd cars. No bug problems in the off season, but most likely a lot of bugs during warmer times. I'd be extra careful on this road because there are a lot of blind corners and the locals in big trucks etc do not go slow or seem particularly interested in yielding much road. It's about 6 miles until you get past all the residences/hatchery and into the natl forest, then to this campground it's another 8-10 miles. No dumps of any kind so pack it all out.
