If you're nostalgic for the way things were...or curious about how they should be...this is the place for you. This place IS the Willy Wonka's of hardware--and I was transformed into the kid in a candy shop. This can't man can. I ended up here on a whim after spending the better part of two days driving from place to place looking for someone who had, and would sell, a pressure switch for my furnace. Spoiler alert--they did. The price was beyond reasonable and the help was divine. If it sounds like I'm going overboard that's because I am. I was so impressed by the selection, the truly knowledgeable help, and the other inventory that I couldn't help but say something. He explained they carry more than 35,000 unique items and I'm not surprised one bit. have miles of warehouse shelves, and that maintaining this brilliant inventory is the crowning achievement for its owner. Whoever that person is, I asked that my thanks be shared. Ankeny Hardware is the opposite of a box store, no self checkout, no marketing, no neatly arranged and well-faced aisles--it is eclectic, crammed full, and marvelous. The help made sure I had the right part and understood how it works--made sure it was the answer to my problem...he wrote the receipt by hand, and walked me to the card machine. Every place I looked there was something I'd spent days or weeks trying to find many times before--and the stuff was all quality. I can't say enough about this place. It should be the first place anyone looks--or the last place if they're tired of looking. A true independent treasure that I'm excited to recommend.

The owner is dishonest and treats customer badly. He just wants to make money by price gauging the customers. I recently brought some electrical parts which I learned later I had over paid. I would not recommend anyone to buy from this store.

I love this place! This is by far my favorite hardware store in all of Portland. The staff and owner are caring and considerate. It is a pleasure to visit there.

The owner of this store doesn't care about his customers AT ALL. I waited in line for over 30 mins while the owner was shoveling hot dogs into his mouth!! I counted 19 HOT DOGS before I left the store. The stench of hotdog water permeated the whole store and was absolutely foul. I guess he would rather guzzle glizzys than run a business??

Old fashioned hardware store. I feared Lowe's and Home Depot killed these places, glad that i was wrong. The best part is that the very friendly counter person knows what he is talking about. I went in for a dryer part and he knew what i needed off the top of his head. That kind of knowledge /service is hard to find anyplace else. Not here.

This place is amazing. Norman, the owner (I think) has been driving 30 miles out to Newberg this past few days, delivering for free portable AC units that donors had purchased, to people who live in a public housing apartment complex in Newberg. These people were going to be evicted for having window AC units. In the middle of the heat wave! Norman is a super hero!!!! He has made at least 2 trips that I know for sure, and probably several more. Shop there!!!!

Norman, the owner of Ankeny Hardware runs and operates an awesome little hardware store in Southeast Portland. Where the store might lack in size, it makes up with a huge heart. When you first walk in you begin to wonder how did they get so much product into that small store. It is merchandised well. They happened to be probably the one of the last retail stores to have portable air conditioners. I bought 3 of them from Norman. I knew that I was going to need to rent a truck or van to transport these units to where they needed to go, which was Newberg Oregon. Without any hesitation, he said he could get them down to Newberg. If ever anyone needed to support a small business, this one should be supported heavily. By far not in the same league when it comes to size compared to the big box retailers. But what you will get there is some awesome personalized service. And not sure, but if they don't carry a

Cool store! I'm glad I was in a rush because there was a lot of impulse buy possibility. I wasn't very knowledgeable about what I needed and the guy who helped me out was welcoming and helpful. I hope to go back when I have time and cash to blow on random stuff I didn't know I wanted.

I had a troubling and negative experience at this store. The owner is very condescending, a know it all, and not honest. I purchased some old type stove burners he had in stock, and assorted other things. I primarily came in for the burners. He didn't give me a price for them at the beginning as I had requested, but said let's wait until the end. He then asked me what other stuff was on my list, but I wasn't going to shop for those items there as his store is very pricey. Being the expert salesperson he is, he spent two hours with me making sure that I purchased every item on my list at his store. Afterwards, he cross-referenced some older numbers I had and found them in his extensive card catalog. That part was very helpful and quite impressive. Not many stores in the area have that capability. He still didn't tell me the prices on these items, eight in total. He then said okay let's ring this up. He then began writing these insane amounts on my ticket. It was a hectic day with many people waiting in line behind me. So call it peer pressure. I just stood there mouth agape and paid for it. Later I found the exact same items at Reliable Parts on SE 114th and Foster Road for $55.00 less. So I tried taking them back, but he reused the return. He said he told me when I was buying them that there were not any returns on electrical items or after 14 days. That never happened. It also turns out he noticed that one of the items were broken. Those items were in the same box that he placed them in, unmoved, and unaltered the whole time I had them. In the end, he just shooed me and my wife out of the store refusing to take them back. One of the other items was a padlock he insisted he would take back if it didn't work. He added that he also has another policy in regards to returns. He charges a 30% restocking fee. I would stay clear of this very expensive trap. On another note... While there he sold a homeless guy a pair of bolt cutters. So if you happen to get a bike stolen in that area, you can go by and thank him.
