What a great organization. It was a great experience to volunteer here. I was really impressed with their model of not only providing food but financial counseling.

Use your judgement and go in cautiously. There are some really great things about this place, like the low cost of food and the opportunity to shop in bulk and be creative. However they often have extremely expired items and you have to be a seriously creative meal prepper with a large deep freezer. Not to mention having to take classes and volunteer to work towards getting this (mostly expired or rotten) food. I do not believe it’s worth the time you spend volunteering and taking classes. Additionally, this may not advertise as a religious organization but it certainly is. I am a believer and even I felt uncomfortable with the pushy manner of church goers on staff especially teaching the classes.
Lastly, my family is mixed race and we had some odd encounters here. Being asked where our identification was, getting odd looks, comments about if we find the kind of cultural foods we are looking for, and just overall weird vibes and a feeling of unwelcome.
My family will be transitioning
from birch and back to trusty old winco.

We were in the program and tried to make a go of it but it really felt like they did not like our people. We are a Black and Latino family and we felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. We had at least three unwanted incidents- two while trying to shop. I would not recommend to anyone Black. I never met a Black or Brown staff person during any interaction. It was just an overall bad experience. I'd rather just go to Costco where I at least see some diversity and don't have weird interactions.
