I made my first appointment with Esther based on a recommendation from a friend. Esther and I discussed the haircut/style I had in mind, and Esther delivered! Just got my 2nd haircut and am just as happy from my first cut. I highly recommend Esther for your haircut needs.

The first time I went to Gilly, I brought in a photo of the queer haircut I wanted (Emma D'arcy, y'all) and asked her, "Do you think I can pull this cut off?" And she said, "Hell yeah" and proceeded to give me exactly what I wanted. In my life, I can't recall loving a haircut more than the one she gave me. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but I truly mean it. Every day, I text my friends and say, "I still love my haircut."
I went to Gilly's because it seemed like an unintimidating salon in my neighborhood amongst so many Scary Cool shops in Portland. Her prices are also more reasonable that the Scary Cool shops.
Working with her was a joy. She's great to talk to but doesn't need to fill the silence. As she was finishing up, she kept checking in to make sure everything looked the way I wanted. And it did. I felt much more myself when I left.

This review of Gilly’s & Esther is long overdue. Gilly”s is one of the few salons that offers Henna hair coloring and open 7 days a week. It’s a relaxed and welcoming environment. Esther has been coloring and cutting my hair for 3 years. Like in other reviews she is fantastic. Henna is a labor intensive process and Esther is a pro.

Second time here and legend Ester does it again! Visited here last summer and remembered having such a great time that I just had to book again. I got my haircut by Ester, who I was thrilled with last time. Since last June I haven't had anyone touch my hair, so Ester had a lot to work with! She greeted me immediately and offered me something to drink. I appreciate how friendly she was and how she really listened to what I was looking to do with my hair (which was to chop most of it off)! Her warm demeanor made me feel so comfortable. Her joyful attitude and great sense of humor made me really special. plus, my hair looks pretty amazing! Making a drastic hair change like I did can be a bit intimidating, but the whole experience was phenomenal thanks to Ester. Highly recommend, I will for sure be back (again)!

Esther gives a fantastic haircut and is an all around wonderful person. My mother hadn't had her haircut since COVID, and Esther gave her a fresh and classic style that made my momma so much more confident afterwards. Also coached me into my first undercut, and I love it.

Unfortunate experience here ... stayed 3 hours and the highlights I got did not at all cover the grey hair on top of my head. A friend took a photo for me as she was shocked I had just come from a hair salon and paid $185 and I was aghast at having so much grey at the top of my head. Tried calling her to come in for a touch up and she hung up on me.

Went for cut & highlights - she put foils all over the top of my head (after mediocre cut) , I told her not to bother with the bottom of my hair as I did not have another hour (it already took 3 hrs)… just saw a friend (2 days later) who pointed out all the grey hair I had on top! Took a picture…my head is covered in white hair… the whole point of spending $185 was to cover the grey with highlights. I do not understand how this woman is in business.. I called her to try to get her to touch up my hair .. she hung up on me.Services: Haircut

Esther is amazing! I'm satisfied with my haircuts 100% of the time, and she works extremely well to interpret my limited ability to describe what I want. She's friendly, attentive, and talented. The feel of the salon is also warm and conscientious on many levels, from organic material use on hair to a comforting aesthetic visually. It gives you a sense of them actually caring not just about the outcome (your hair looking great) but the process of getting there (and enjoying that process!).
