There's shopping (tedious): groceries, school supplies. There's browsing (frivolous and serious): what we don't need and what we do. Then there's walking into a treasure chest, a shop full of magic, a cornucopia that never ends. Yes, I'm mixing metaphors. I have English degrees that say I can, right there on the diplomas. And Great NW Antiques is worth poetry, song, and every metaphor you can devise. I wandered into 42nd St. station one afternoon and saw a shop was going into the space formerly occupied by Lisa's Upholstery (another great find whom I followed everywhere she went--but I digress.) I couldn't believe my eyes or my luck. Kim Korbe, proprietor, has a wonderful eye and eclectic taste and enormous collections. Straight up fact: every square inch is put to use and customers have to practically be shoehorned in. (I am also allowed dangling participles--see right there on the diploma.) There's furniture, rugs, clothing, antiques of different eras and countries, and, oh, the jewelry. If you don't see something, ask. I told Kim I needed a perfume bottle and she promptly produced one that was perfect and perfect for me. Kim is a joy to talk to and over time she gets to know you and what you like, and best of all, what you might like. I love rings and love the rings I've bought from her. I may not be able to afford everything I like but I think her prices are fairly set. And if I don't buy something every visit, I always leave richer for the experience.

Located upstairs!! Next to the post office. This is one of the greatest little hole in the wall, hidden gems of the city. If you're into being surrounded by the beautiful creations crafted by artisans all around the world from the days of yesteryear to this last year. There's truly something for everyone.. I found this by a local artist and there's more different colors and sizes and prices are totally competitive... and these little necklaces.. The gals who work there are friendly and helpful. Stop in and support your local businesses.. when they thrive we all thrive!

I was racially profiled (I'm Hispanic) and my spouse who's white was judged by their appearance. When we asked to see an item in a display case by the owner she would only open it if my white spouse was by me and my spouse didn't notice that (Her words were I'll open it if your little friend is by you) my spouse walked away not realizing that and so the owner then told me that she didn't have the keys of that specific display case. Of which the contents had multiple decent priced items, so I don't understand why an owner would not have the key to a display case with more expensive items. Feels she thought we were thieves and did not want to serve us. Sad as I was looking to spend $50+ to support local businesses.
