My need to open an additional checking account led me to the downtown Portland Umpqua branch on Yamhill Street. I've always preferred to open a deposit account in-person, as it's an impressionable experience visiting a branch and seeing how a bank interacts with its customers. It was a dismal, rainy Monday and upon entering the branch my moods were immediately lifted with a modern, comfortable décor and a friendly, warm greeting from one of the tellers. I did not have an appointment, but only waited a few minutes and met with the branch manager, Tom. It sounds funny, but this was the most pleasant, engaging, and enjoyable bank-branch experience I've had. Tom shows genuine interest in knowing who I am as a person first, and a customer second--and how Umpqua can best support my financial needs. There was laugher and good feelings all-around. It is clear the branch staff enjoy their team and enjoy working hard for their customers. Umpqua has all the services of a bank behemoth, including a snazzy ultra-modern new logo, but still retains the values of respect, kindness, and authenticity to its customers; an experience that we all can appreciate when visiting a branch. A+ for the Umpqua Yamhill St branch.

I always enjoy my quick visits to Umpqua Bank. This experience was one of my best, Yoselin was warm and welcoming. They did an amazing job at servicing me and getting my tasks done at an efficient pace. Keep up the great work!

Be aware. Not a good bank if anything goes wrong, Especially the customer service women in the branch downtown, Pioneer square. I was hit by a car. I tried to get my money from the bank. They were not helpful at all. I had to leave to go physically downtown. I closed my account. Three women sitting doing minimal, not one client in the bank. And their attitude righteous.

When I had a Mortgage closed at Umpqua it was a poor experience that left me unexpectedly footing a $800/mo bill because an untrained mortgage aid incorrectly presented me paperwork and did not accurately describe the nature of how my loan payments were structured.I got a "sorry" while I went into credit card debt for a few months.I shouldn't have been so foolish as to trust my Umpqua Bank person and read the contract myself, I learned the hard way when my loan closed, my bad....

I went into this local branch to ask whether they had paper coin rolls. They don't, but the bank person said they have a no-fee coin counter. That's super. In any case this review is really about the welcoming atmosphere of this location as is my experience with all Umpqua locations. They have complementary tea and coffee. It's really good tea in my opinion. They may even have cookies on certain days. After a quick question, I felt good about having my tea and browsing the daily newspapers they have. They also have some magazines such as The Economist and a small selection of books. Now I'm not saying you can bring your computer here and camp out like people do at Starbucks. They have the library a few hundred meters away for that. But it's a nice relaxing atmosphere to experience when you do come to bank. It's a good reason to bank locally at Umpqua. The bank certainly is finding a niche between Wells Fargo and internet banks.

I've been banking with Umpqua for the last 14yrs. All of my experiences up until the last 2 months have been wonderful (minus the times I have to call in and wait on hold for far too long). I had issues with Bill Pay a couple of times recently, one was my fault and the second Umpqua Banks fault. The teller who helped me both times was blunt and rude with no real explanation for why the bank has contradicted itself in many cases. When I said that I would be leaving the bank after all these years, her response: "that's unfortunate" with no expression on her face, she didn't even look at me. It's amazing how a bank can turn from Wonderful to Horrible with one rotten egg employee. I thought they were all about customer service and maintaining a relationship with it's customers. I was wrong.

We have banked at Umpqua 4-5 years! Very satisfied with our "friendly" go-to store on Lovejoy in the Pearl District. Today I walked into the newest bank-store near Pioneer Square. This store is Euro-contempary in layout inside. Very relaxing and accommodating with lots of spaces to have a meet up with a friend or business associate. There is a little conference space with the lap-top connectivity to hold a mini-meeting, Skype or run a slide show on the big screen. Think I'll post my travel pics of Utah and show my fellow friends or Yelpers. That would be cool! There is a small library of local authors and reading room. A room to sip, surf and read. Complimentary coffee. Oh yea, you can cash a check and make deposits with a friendly teller. Most important Bankrate.com gives Umpqua the highest "Superior" 5 star rating for financial strength. What more do you need in a bank? A little IPA withdrawal!
