Rude nasty attitude wouldn’t help even though they didn’t “close for lunch” for 5 minutes.

How on earth can you have a post office that is not wheelchair accessible?!? The only door not locked is a narrow one with stairs, preventing wheelchairs from going in.

I never write negative reviews. What I do instead, is never go back to the business or location that I had a bad experience or customer service.
I was going to be overseas for some time and I needed a safe and secure place for all of my important mail to go to. I am a USAF veteran, healthcare worker and an avid traveler.
This is what happened to me; I went to this post office location; 204 SW 5th Ave in Portland, to get set up with a P.O. BOX for the first time and complete an address change form with the help from the post office clerk named Heb Knowles. I had let him know that I will overseas for some time.
Mr. Heb took my address change forms and set me up with the P.O. BOX and handed me the keys that day which was sometime in July 2023. I also set up an autopayment since I was going to be overseas for a while.
I come back in October 2024 to open my P.O. Box to get my mail after all this time. I try to open my box, but the keys weren't working. I got in line to my surprise, Mr. Heb was the post office clerk on duty. I told him about the keys not working. He tells me without an investigating the issue, that my box lock must have been changed due to lack of payment. I said, that is not true at all.
I told him in fact, that his statements were inaccurate while showing him all of my autopayment receipts from the bank and I showed him a picture of a note of my supposed P.O. Box address number that he handwritten for me last year when he helped me set it all up.
He had asked for my name after I had told him, he stated that my name sounded so familiar. He then tells me that my name sounded so familiar because he had been sending back all of my mail received at this location back to the sender. Hearing him saying this so casually, really upset me.
He went inside the mail room behind the mailboxes to look for a box with my name. He finds out that he had assigned me the wrong P.O. Box number and handed me the wrong keys.
He tells me that he gave me the wrong P.O. Box address number and keys. Mr. Heb Knowles did not apologize to me. Instead of giving me an apology for what had happened and recognizing the mistake that he had made; he went on raising his voice in front of all the people waiting in line, making a screen while gaslighting me, and blaming me for not checking my P.O. Box often enough.
I reminded him, what happened was due to the mistakes that he made and that this was his fault and error. I demanded to get a full refund for all the payments made since my P.O. Box was never activated, and I had not received a single mail in this P.O. box address. He responded with a nasty tone and informed me to call the 1800 customer service on the website to request a refund.
I told him to write his full name so that I could submit a complaint. His full name is Heb Knowles, post office clerk T-7. I called the customer service number, submitted a complaint and made a report, and I haven't yet heard back from them about my refund.
I will say that this post office clerk is aloof, rude and not responsible and professional with their customer service. He really needs to retire because he isn't doing a great job in the customer service department.

Anyone who follows Me or has happened to have read any of My other reviews; you will notice that I am mindful with My critiques and the majority of the time I give a high rating. I give high ratings when: there’s not a long wait, the store is clean, and the customer service is good. Simple enough, yes? I will go on record and say that this Post Office has always been neat, clean and organized when I visit; and I really have never had to wait in line here but maybe a few times. With that being said... respectfully, the clerks that I have been in contact with when I come here never EVER seem to be in a good mood. EVER. VERY icy and aloof. I'm uncertain why 'Herb the Horrible' Post Master has yet to retire? ??♀️ Going by the past and RECENT reviews of this particular Post Office, I see I’m NOT the only one who has had TRASH Customer Service here. I only patronize this Post Office because I have to. The generous 1 star rating is due to the nice selection of greeting cards that are available on display. Those greeting cards deserve better ?

I need help in person applying for a PO box because I have learning disabilities I went in for help and basically decided on just going to a different location entirely. I was told 6 months was required if i wanted to apply in person, despite only needing 3 months. Thats weird to me because anyone disabled having to apply in person and use this post office is required to pay for 6 months. I was told to just apply online if i want 3 months, again I cant apply online, so now I have to go to a office a lot further from my house to get help, because I cant afford 6 months. Its giving i want to charge disabled or elderly poeple more money for needing help in person thats actually ridiculous and super dystopian. Considering another location was more than willing to help me and let me apply for 3 months in person prooves that I definitely was better off going to a different post office.

The older man that works here has been condescending and rude every time I’ve been into this location. I will not be returning. And to learn this is the post master, he should be ashamed of how he treats customers.

I have high regard for USPS agency and its employees, but the people who work at this location are the worst USPS staff I’ve ever encountered. When will the OR postmaster general take note and address the issues?!

Closed for lunch. This is a post office from the 19th century.

The old white guy that is there is about rude as a person can be, and to find out that he is also the post master. Seems to be overpaid and underworked. The Oriental fellow that works there is way better. If the post office don't HAVE to sell money orders, post it for all to see.

We went in to post some post cards from our travels and Herb helped us quickly and efficiently!
He was personable and was happy to chat and tell us about Portland. It was nice meeting him.
P.S. the negative reviews feel over-the-top.
