So my bf of 15 years have been shopping at Safeway for about the last 13 years. The St John's Safeway is soooo ghetto. Most of the employees are oddly "slow" people with various "handicaps". The patrons are a little ghetto too. The worst are their "locked" bathrooms that's always full of homeless business. The deli department has laughably bad customer service. The best times are when they randomly have guest checkers.

This place is not bad. Pretty clean, not too busy. Sale prices are usually good. Normal prices can be a lil higher than Fred Meyer.

Literally the worst pharmacy I have ever tried to use. Trying to get my dogs seizure meds transferred. Had to come in and write a transfer paperwork. No big deal.. did that on Monday.... Wednesday arrives... calling to find out status because it's Seizure medication for my dog and she can't stop abruptly... because it's medication for seizures... which she has. Anyways the lady tells me they haven't received the transfer response from prior pharmacy and she tells me to call them and see the status (weird? It feels like I shouldn't be doing their job for them). Old pharmacy stated they sent it as soon as they got it from Safeway. They also commented on how odd it is that I am calling and asking what the status is. Followed up with Safeway and told them it was sent back the same day and I was having them resend it to make sure they get it. She tells me they received the fax, but only got half of it...? Fix your broken fax machine! Going into Safeway again to find out the status and make sure they got the new fax and there was no issue with the transfer. She tells me yes... then she tells me the the cost and acting surprised on how much it is! Like honestly... do they think I don't know I'm spending $300 gladly on my dog monthly and I do it because I love my dog! Just wait because here is the best part. She proceeds to tell me they don't have the medication and they need to order it. I CHECKED WITH THEM ON MONDAY AND MADE SURE THEY HAD THAT MEDICATION IN STOCK AND SHE SAID YES THEY DO. DO NOT GO HERE.

This store price gouges. It is cheaper to buy from any other grocery store and even have it delivered (Instacart other delivery services) than it is to buy from this store. Items often have a 40%+ markup. Examples: 1. Herbal Essences Large Shampoo bottle = $11-12 here. Elsewhere it is $8. That is an over 40% markup. 2. Classic Thick cut store brand bacon (cheapest avail) = $7. Elsewhere it is $5. Another 40% markup. 3. Mission Tortilla Strips = $3.79 (on sale). Elsewhere they are $2.69. Again, 40%+ markup. 4. Kings Hawaiian Sweet Rolls 12PK = $6.09+. Elsewhere they are $3.89. That is an over 55% markup. Use this store purely for emergency situations. Don't make this your neighborhood market even if it's in your neighborhood.

How do you really review a grocery store? Might one presume that this grocery store is the same as every other Safeway in the US? These are questions I will attempt to answer. I come here just about everyday. Not because I'm particularly in need of food but because I have a boring life that is assuaged by looking at pretty displays and seeing what red grapes are on offer that day. I feel my life is improved by this store. It's not just the food or the people, it's an indoor place that gives me a reason to be out of the house, tough to come by in pandemic times. First, this is the best Safeway within 20 miles. Safeway is my store (I do the coupons and I have the app on my phone like a nerd). This is the largest Safeway in the area, and besides the New Seasons on Lombard, it's the nicest grocery store in St. John's. This Safeway doesn't have the usual marks of a low quality Safeway, which are a small parking lot and low, dimly lit ceilings. At least if you are unhappy about the selection here you can do it in well lit aisles. The produce offerings are where a store would be most likely to get points off from me. I regularly need items like Aloe Vera, turmeric, and honey crisp apples. This store has them. Aside from the produce variety they offer quite a lot of good sauce selection as well as many beverages, just about every kind of energy drink you could want. I don't encounter or require staff that often. Most of the time I am using the self-checkout which always has spaces open. I can seldom remember waiting in line here. One time I wanted to get my monopoly tickets and the girl in charge of the self checkout seemed overwhelmed by the simple task she was doing, unable to help me. I shrugged it off as family problems or overwhelmed millennial problems and went about my day.

I dislike every aspect of this store. From its poor customer service to its high prices. Today however their pharmacy is the problem. I can never get a hold if someone at the pharmacy. It’s not like I need to call often but it doesn’t matter what day or what time of day no one ever answers the phone. My doctor sent a new prescription to be filled hours ago but I am unable to verify that it has been filled. A simple 3 minute telephone call. If this was any other pharmacy it would have been plenty of time but this pharmacy takes so long to fill a prescription if I were to go to the store without waiting 48 hours there is a good chance it hasn’t been filled. I am disabled I have to fo through a lot to leave my home and to go the store only to be told it hasnt been filled yet is very upsetting. I recommend if you have a choice to use any other pharmacy yhen please do so

Alright, so really i'd say this location is a 3.5 and improving. When I first started coming here a year ago, it was pretty awful. Produce seemed not that great, they seem to be out of items I'm often looking for, or just generally don't carry what I'm looking for. However they have been renovating lately it seems. The produce section now has a nice organic section and the produce no longer looks like they got the week old options delivered in from corporate. That's definitely exciting! They also recently started carrying oat milk and oat milk creamer and I could not be happier! One gripe I still have with this store, and the reason I did not give it more stars- I find the arrangement of this store to be perplexing and no matter how many times I come in here, I will almost always be wandering up and down the aisles multiple times looking for something specific that I can't find. I don't understand it. It drives me nuts. It's just a weird layout. Most of the employees I've encountered here are super kind. The self checkout is my preferred method since there usually only one cashier working (Drives me crazy - stores do this on purpose and it's super annoying). The self checkout almost alwaysssss yells at me when I'm checking out. So the checkout process is definitely not my favorite either way you split it. There's also a starbucks here, which is super handy if you need a coffee to go on your way out.

I'm surprised this store has 2 stars. I recently moved from San Diego to The Union at St. John's. This move has been a shock to my entire system. I've lived all over the country and I can say this Safeway is the most disgusting, ghetto, poorly run grocery store I've ever been to. This is the type of store I'd expect in Cuba or a 3rd world African republic. They never have more than 2 cashiers on hand at any given time. I've been in lines 15 people deep. Their self checkout is the busiest spot in the store due to sheer greed or incompetence. I refuse to visit this store in the future, they don't deserve my business nor yours. If you have your own transportation I urge you to visit another store but if you want to want to live out your fantasy of a zombie apocalypse then this is a good place to visit.

Store is filthy , no carts inside , refrozen melted cobblers from power outage , open food , empty shelves but pallets everywhere blocking isles , dirty masks on floor , pics speak for themselves !
I have shopped here for 6 years and it has started declining this year and today was my last time , it was disgusting !

This is the most disgusting and disappointing Safeway I've ever set foot in. The store is always physically dirty, items are rarely in stock, whereas other locations are fully stocked during Covid. The pharmacy has strange hours and they don't staff for lunch breaks so I often find myself waiting up to 40 mins. Prescriptions are filled with zero sense of urgency. The lead pharmacist doesn't wear his mask over his nose. And to think that he's a health professional! Moreover, many employees sag their pants around their knees and lack any sort of professional appearance, no name tags (conveniently) so that I can't mention them by name. But what really shocks and pisses me off is that they get away with wearing their masks on their chins. This is a pandemic, believe what you want but I won't be shopping somewhere that people clearly couldn't care less about me.

I went up to this cashier to ask for a price... The item did not have a shelf tag so I didn't know what the price was, I went up to the self-checkout and asked this cashier if she could tell me the price, she looked at it and guessed $9, the item was $$5.49, bad guess... She was texting on her phone, and at if you notice her pants are almost around her ankles her ass was definitely hanging out... Not only was the lackluster customer service non-existent, who wants to go to a grocery store and look at someone's ass? Not me and I don't think I'll be shopping there again

Has not been great lately. Two visits ago... Bought half and half. Went home and put it in my coffee and it was chunky and totally curdled. More than a week before the expiration. Last visit... Bought pre-cut celery. Got it home, opened it... They were slimy and breaking down. I don't know if they have a problem with their refrigeration or what... But it's no bueno. I'll begrudgingly head back over to Feddy's.

Nice spacious store with great produce selections and the always wonderful Safeway florist. However, the check out process was ridiculously slow--pleasant but sloth slow--and the clerk was using wireless earbuds. Safeway, what the heck?! The deli counter service greeted me with, "I'll be with you when I'm done with this...," mumble, mumble. Two minutes later, when he was done arranging a display, he asked me what I wanted. I only stayed because I was morbidly curious on how long he could ignore me. Turns out, it was almost all of "American Idiot" by Green Day. Well, I'm bummed. There are no grocery stores near my home, so this was a last ditch effort to find an affordable store for basics like paper towels, soap and whatnot. The drive and go isn't an option here and the delivery option employs A LOT of grocery bag (and 1 mushroom if you mistakenly think you're ordering a pound like I did). On the up side, no groceries means more dining out.

I really appreciate this store. They now have bottle drop and it's the coolest thing ever. I just started recycling for cash again for the first time since I was a kid. Brings back memories. Also there are some really great employees here. I will find out there names and add them later. Thanks gu
