Edited to add: The business replied here on Google. I don't see how to respond, so my answers are: I have only *one* other negative review for a Portland business - not several. I also have a positive one for a Portland business. I have one negative review for a business in NYC, which is from several years ago, and my experience in that restaurant was the worst I've had in my life. There is also one negative review about a racist business owner in Washington (do with that what you will). I stand by each of these reviews. For the record, we had 1 great experience at Sit Still, then 2 negative experiences where we were talked out of getting a trim. Maybe that's a fluke, but it feels like some sort of company approach. Next, I didn't say the stylist growled, I wrote that it *seemed* like she would. She was angry, hardly spoke (except to push us out of getting a trim), and did a bad job. Note, this experience was in late summer of 2023. The reason I posted the review this week is because I've been doing a search for a barber to take my son, and I thought I should tell other people about what we experienced at Sit Still because (1) children and adults do know when a stylist is grouchy and not open to hearing what they say (2) kids do care what their hair looks like (3) a stylist should give people a trim if that's what the client asks for (4) maybe revisit your tier system - or post on your website that the lower tier stylist might be angry and sullen and not do such a good job. Relateldy, my child is very chill and sweet, so that seems even more of a reason to wonder why the stylist was so grouchy. Maybe the hairstylist is already gone but my suggestion is - if you're going to charge the prices that you do - make sure you hire the right people. And revisit your tier system. This is a children's salon, after all. And if you have to have lower tier stylists, make sure they can still do the right job and that they are not too angry. I don't know how I would benefit by making this all up. Take this as constructive criticism. You have the business - - and people will keep going to it if you have quality control and maintain standards for whatever "tier" people pay for. Thanks. Here's my original review:My son once got a lovely haircut here, but we came back 2 times, and both of the times things didn't go well. Both of those times, 2 different stylists discouraged my son from getting a trim, then gave my son a not-so-great haircut. They have tiers of stylists, so you pay more for a better stylist. This seems like a bad idea, right? Like shouldn't all stylists have the same standards and pay? Why such a strange tier system for children's haircuts? Think about it.Also, the last time we went, the stylist, who we had never been to before, looked like she would growl if I came close or tried to help explain the cut my son wanted. Anyway, beware of stylists talking you out of the cut you want. If that happened once, I'd think it was a fluke, but it didn't.

We LOVE getting our boys haircuts here! The stylists did a great job making the kids feel safe and comfortable, making it all fun and playful and they are so quick! The haircuts only took 30 minutes at most and looked amazing. The kids love watching iPads and sitting in the cool chairs. Ainsley did a great job checking in with me about the cut along the way to make sure I was happy with it. Much appreciated!

The owner sent me a text message, not an email. I find it laughable that she tried to slander me with her ‘one star’ comment. If you look, you very clearly see there are five stars for an array of businesses. Her hairstylist had two sentences with me before chopping off 5 inches of my son’s baby hair. I wanted to keep as much length as possible! Genetically he is a blonde baby, who will end up with dark black hair, and she took that all away from me and my son. The entire experience was awful. The haircut is awful. I will never go back. Be careful. The first few haircuts for a child are always important for their mother, and it would be nice if a children’s hair salon would understand that. If she had taken three minutes to have a conversation with me about what I wanted out of the haircut this might be a five star review. My heart has genuinely been hurting for a week! Sure his hair will grow back, but it will never be blonde again, and I can never change the experience that we had.Deeply and genuinely sad.

My daughters first experience getting her haircut, and it was wonderful. The stylist was so sweet and took the time to make sure my daughter was comfortable throughout the cut. We will be coming back for my son’s haircut soon.Service: Kids' cuts

Both of the women working were phenomenal! The lady working on my autistic son (I can't remember her name) was so patient and explained everything to him so he was prepared. She moved at his own pace and she never once got flustered. I was deeply impressed.Service: Kids' cuts

Great place! Took my kid in for his second hair cut. Dennett was amazing. He’s one and the first haircut was a horrible experience lots of crying. With Dennett he didn’t shed a tear, he was calm, and actually enjoyed the whole process. Highly recommend.Service: Kids' cuts

We had one appointment that they needed to reschedule due to someone calling out sick which is fine, but they just called 10 minutes before our rescheduled appointment to cancel it while we were on our way! We won’t be wasting our time here anymore

Wonderful employees and an adorable salon. We had such a great experience here today. My son is very uncomfortable with haircuts, but the stylist was so patient and gentle with him. They explained that it'll take several visits to help him build a positive association with getting his hair cut. The stylist wasn't able to get much hair trimmed, but at the end my son got to pick out a color spray for his hair and have it styled. Which he absolutely loved! He also got to pick out a little toy before we left.

Had an amazing experience with Nikki. My daughter got her first haircut today. She has sensory over responsiveness and is fearful of new people and new situations. I completely expected to leave with no haircut but happy to pay anyways. It went AMAZING! She had all sorts of techniques and distractions and was successful without any sort of hiccup. Highly recommend. We will be back.

Had really high hopes for this place and getting my son’s first haircut. The salon is cute and well setup for kids. We were greeted nicely. Unfortunately once he was in the seat everything felt very rushed. I almost felt like the stylist was giving us orders. In determining the cut she asked “long or short”- the website told us to have photos of what we wanted and when I tried to give her an idea of what we had in mind she cut me off almost immediately and said “we’ll see.” I understand that first haircuts don’t always turn out how they should, but I felt like we were even given a choice. She was on her own agenda. In any case, his hair is so much shorter than I wanted and I 1000% regret taking him. I thought the upcharge for the first haircut meant the stylist would be able to take more time to make it a mutually good experience and that just didn’t happen.Service: Kids' cuts

I was worried as my son is mixed and I’ve had bad experiences getting my own African American hair cut at salons that don’t feature black stylists. But the haircut looks amazing and the gentle caring stylist was great despite two anxious, hovering parents.

They are very nice and great service. My daughter likes they put some sparkling color after haircut, I would recommend to take your kid instead of trying other adult places this one is the right fit for kids.

They have cool kid chairs, tablets with pbs kids, and managed to fit us in on the same day with only a couple hours notice. Ainsley understood my son’s wavy hair and did a great job.

Not respectful of customer's time. For our appointment, they cancelled the day of and said that the stylist wasn't available. We rescheduled for later in the week at a somewhat inconvenient time that required us picking our son up early and driving across the city. As there was a lot of traffic the day of, we called well in advance to let them know. The receptionist said it would be fine. A few minutes after our scheduled time, as we're pulling in, they called to tell us that they were no longer taking us because the next customer was already there. WE WERE LESS THAN 5 MINUTES LATE AND THEY PREVIOUSLY CANCELLED ON US THE DAY OF.Service: Haircut
