35 years ago I opened a small account at the Schwab office on the ground floor of the World Trade Center, NYC. Of course, that office vanished, but I have moved to Eastern PA. 99% of my contact is Schwab is done online. However, I have visited the Cedar Crest office in Allentown, PA probably 8 to 10 times over the last decade. I live about a half-hour drive from this office. On one occasion, I wanted to withdraw a large amount for a downpayment on a house. I was able to walk in and get the check within minutes. Another time I met with Mr. Brooks for general long-term advice. His advice was very general (diversify!), but worthwhile. Most times I deal with the agent who mans the counter at the reception area. I don't know his name, but he has always been friendly, helpful and efficient. By the way, if I recall correctly, 35 years ago trades at Schwab cost $29 and had to bought in lots of say, 10 or 100 shares. There was an added expense for what they called odd lots. Today most trades are free and it is even possible to buy fractional shares. It has become easier and cheaper to be an individual investor. If you live in the Allentown area this office is a pleasure to deal with.

This comment does not refer to the office in Allentown, but to the service I did not get when I called 1800 435 4000. First, I had to wait for ages. Second, when someone finally answered, they said I was cutting out on them and I had to call them back. Well, my phone is fine so it must be their lines that are faulty. I don't have time to call back and wait, wait, wait. These brokerage firms have them where they want us.

The man who I talked to was extremely condescending and disrespectful.

charles schwab is the worse and most expensive place you can trade through, the employees of charles schwab are incompetent and no nothing about customer services. i have an account with them for about 10 years they never lost a penny with me and yesterday they force sold a 300 of my uslv shares in the worse time that it can be sold, if they sold it a day earlier i could have got at least $ 600.00 more and today it is going up so if they waited one day i could have lost much less than what i lost, and they want you to believe that they know about trading and that you can trust them with your money i am done with this stupid joint.
