The Model train layouts are the main feature here. (2 floors) & They are incredible! the crew of people working on it have amazing talent and are very willing to chat about all of it. Because I lived in Columbia for 30yrs I very much enjoyed the portion of the layout that replicated a section of the town. Definitely recommend a visit (open Sat or Sun)

Alot of history and description of the area, once a church and now a historical society. The people have artifacts of the history and of course the burning bridge of Columbia during the Civil War which was a big piece of history that was part of the change and course of the American Civil War.

Avoid this historical society at all costs! The buildings look like they are ready to fall down; the steps are dangerous and there is no handicap accessibility. We did even bother going in, it wasn't worth the risk.

The whole family had a wonderful time right before Christmas going to see the train display. The kids very much enjoyed it and the people that manage the museum where super nice people and took the time to explain to our children everything about the layout and the history of Columbia! Highly recommend!

A Train Display you have to see to believe!Tons of history on Columbia and its early inhabitants. Unassuming building, ( Old Baptist Church) parked on street. They request a donation. If you bring kids, make sure they are able to keep their hands off the train set! The volunteers put HOURS maintaining and fixing the display and it deserves respectAMAZING!

The staff and volunteers of the Columbia historic preservation society are exceptionally kind, hospitable, and very knowledgeable. The train platform is unbelievable. All of the details are exceptional. We were able to see so many of the houses in our neighborhood, and in the older parts of the city. It was a great 3D view of Columbia. Amazing details. The holdings of the museum are one of a kind. Great info on Columbia’s past including the Underground Railroad. The collection of documents and photos is superb. You must stop in and research our town. The place is also a Mecca for Albatwitch folklore and Merch. Don’t miss this FABULOUS PLACE.Check out my photos on Google Maps.

Don't expect a five star publicly funded museum but for a small town museum by volunteers they have nice programs. The upstairs from the weekend after Thanksgiving to Christmas hosts a model train layout. The layout is quite large, probably 1000 square feet and made by hand to represent Columbia. In any given Sunday before the holiday season you will find volunteers working with tiny paint brushes and glue to make the layout look as realistic as possible. I attended for an UGRR walking tour. For a donation, docent volunteer Chris does a walking tour leaving from the Columbia Historical Preservation Society that loops through town for about a mile. If you are an underground railroad buff, you really want to take the tour. Wear comfy shoes. Call ahead to try to make a reservation.
