I went to the ER on 6/20/25. I was fully prepared to have a frustrating experience. Ive been to this facility before and it...didnt go well. But I also understand the staffing crisis thats been happening in the medical field.
This experience was amazing. I informed the staff I was a chronic pain patient, experiencing a new scary pain. You could visably tell I was struggling. I'm also a hard stick.
The staff listened to all the advice my doctors have given me to relay to make these visits easier. And for the first time I was listened to.
Because we worked together as a team I recieved mild pain meds and zofran. Oh man zofran is the best lol. In a timely manor.
We were able to rule out anything immediately life threatening. While I'm still in discomfort, thats a job for me and my pcp. The er staff did exactly what they were suppose to, reassured me, helped, made sure I wasnt in danger, and we've ruled out a lot of scary dangerous things.
People forget the er isnt to make you instantly better, its to help in an emergency. They did. And they did it with compassion, respect, and kindness. Chronic pain patients arent used to that.
Maybe I got lucky and the staff that day was juat amazing. Or maybe pain patients and er staff are finally learning to work together. I for one would like to thank every single nurse, doctor, and imaging/lab tech. I know we we're all frustrated to not get an answer but at least Im not worried Im going to have something explode. Thank you so much.
The technical details. It was early morning. I didnt see anyone else waiting. I was immediately checked in. Prior tests from pcp helped us target an area to investigate. More bloodwork was done, im a hard stick, they only tried twice before calling in the stick em team. Other place have tried A LOT more before believing that this is always a problem get someone who works with the weirdos lol. Special stick em and I worked together to get at least a good med iv. Blood had to be drawn again. But the lab listened to what other lab workers have said and got me on the first go (very rare).
Overall I was in, meds, tests, results, and a plan for how to move forward in less than 4 hours.
No I was not given any meds to take home. I didnt want them. I understand that pain meds mask problems. We need me to feel if this changes, gets worse, better, etc or we'll never figure out what it is.
Our role as pain patients is to understand their limitations as well. So if youre educated and can communicate effectively, give this staff a shot. But have realistic expectations. My experience probably would have been different later that night. We also have to stay aware of when its just not a good time for a chronic pain patients to end up in the er.

Until the day before my stepdads last day his care was excellent. And it was actually issues with dietary and miscommunication with him being on a regular diet or low carb. Was he fussy and irritated, yes! He just had surgery and was hungry. This morning they seemed to have had another mishap with food. Not what he ordered or its cold.
Did he fuss, yes!! I apologize for that but however, when being discharged the nurse and patient care tech were saying BYE sarcastically like they were happy for him to leave today. I believe their names were Abby and Bre. Kersten, Jackie, Helen, Shaquana and few others had been great throughout his whole week stay until yesterday. During the week a lady came in and asked him how was everything and it was fine until after surgery yesterday. I don’t want him to ever come back and feel they will be rude and ignore him and talk rudely. Please let staff know to have empathy for sick people. We seemed to have lost that as I have worked in a hospital for over 25 yrs and workers use to care, empathize and maybe go talk amongst each other to vent without the patient knowing how they really felt. Other that yesterday and today it was a great stay and we do thank the staff that didn’t take things personal. Discharged early afternoon 5-24-25.

I’m not giving a five star only because I’ve only been there maybe 3 or 4 times for various tests. The staff have been great, and very professional. Facilities have been nice and clean. ER was backed up, but not their fault since Sharon hospital was closed at the time and they were doing the best they could with all the extra patients.

Absolutely appalling switchboard operator-- when you call the main number a very impatient and rude woman picks up, this is approx 3PM on a Wed. Whoever it is has a terrible attitude. I also work in customer service and never feel compelled to talk down to others and make crass remarks the way she did. Good luck to anyone who encounters her

Left the emergency room with blood pressure of 156/107 and the nurse said they don’t treat until it up to 180. Also they gave me 1mg of Ativan and let me drive home 35 minutes later.

I've always liked UPMC facilities, I think they do a great job and have potential to be one of the best hospital systems in the country, much like Mayo Clinic or John's Hopkins. BUT THE ER WAIT TIMES ARE JUST FLAT OUT NOT ACCEPTABLE! I don't know if it's greedy insurance companies regulating this, the hospital itself or what but IT CANNOT CONTINUE! Every person that ends up in this ER says the same thing. Just put on a few more doctors...even if they have some down time sometimes when it's not so busy. Then when it is busy which seems to be all the time, and someone that just cut off half their foot with a chainsaw or severely burned themselves or has terrible migraines or got half torn apart by rabid pitbulls or whatever walks in...they don't have to sit in the ER for 7 hours with all the other mangled patients waiting to be seen!

My husband had knee replacement surgery on 11-14-2023The entire day went seamless. From registration to discharge. Everyone was caring, helpful, patience and understanding of our needs. I would like to recognize the nurses who cared for my husband. Is there a way to do this?

We walked in, and there must have been 40-50 people in the waiting area. Some of the patients were waiting 5 hours or more. I took my husband elsewhere. Never again!

My sister was here for allergic reaction. The staff was very unprofessional. Nurses were cussing constantly with children in the ER. They also made fun of patients, as a veteran in the military and a corpsman I understand the horrible bedside manner being displayed by people who should be caring for people and providing a reassuring professional response to their patients. This was one of the worst experiences and worst displays of caring for people I have witnessed in a hospital environment.
