Beautifully renovated rooms rooms- the bathrooms are just great! Not a big hotel, maybe 12+ rooms. Has a nice "yesteryear" feel... no coffee machines in the rooms though... I had both lunch and dinner here, food was great... nice rear patio for eating/hanging out... if you don't want a busy, noisy, modern hotel, then this is the place for you. ?

This is a small when I guess I might call boutique hotel that is small-only about fifteen guestrooms total. Rooms that have been renovated look really great. The first floor's where you get a real feel for the building, one where James Buchanan former US PRESIDENT lived for many years. Dining room is good, food was excellent. I'll stay here again if the need arises...

Not sure why this place has so many 5-star reviews. I guess it’s clean and it’s quaint. It was unstaffed on the night we stayed. More like an AirBnB than a hotel. Restaurant closed Sunday/Monday and no staff at all on-site. Like many historic towns, Mercersburg leans toward run down rather than well maintained and smartly updated - same for this hotel. Plumbing, HVAC and electrical all in need of updating. Look closely at walls and baseboards and years of water damage are evident. If you are looking for something super close to the Academy, it won’t be the worst choice but in my opinion, not worthy of 5-stars.

This beautiful hotel brings the magic of history to life in a peaceful small town retreat. When our car broke down on New Year's Eve, we needed a place to stay the night. Thankfully the James Buchanan Hotel had one room left. Every staff member we met was gracious, accommodating, and kind. The lounge was so cozy, the restaurant is fantastic and the drinks were spectacular. We even stayed in James Buchanan's bedroom! They turned our nightmare of a night into a wonderful night to remember. It's a great hotel run by great people.

Spent the night in room 202. The building is really neat, and the room was lovely. If you spend the night, be sure to visit the amazing restaurant downstairs. A perfect little weekend getaway.

Really accommodating and friendly Inn Keeper, easy access and plenty of parking. But check what restaurants are open when you visit. We were stuck with a so so pub burger and fries with several decent spots including the Inn closed Monday night. Also there wasn't any Buchanan reading material in the room. Understandable given his rank. But bring your own if you want to read and remember it's really his father's house.

From the first time I booked online, I was happily texted by Peter who looks after newcomers. Charming 4th of July weekend, we stayed another day as the ONLY guests in the heat. Had the entire place to roam about and discover outer Mercersburg. Just returned for Man-friend's birthday and David and the Manager, Mitch were as accommodating as could be. They remembered us and we were excited to see Eric Baker (Rising Star Chef's) menu - Buddy had the Steak with crispy onion rings over Mushroom Risotto, I had the Salmon Caprese, even the basil leave's were sautee'd in butter. I brought the molten lava cupcakes (and for staff) and the room was a scrumptious, comfy and felt like home (a glam home albeit). I can't wait to celebrate something again and ski this winter, as it's SO close to Whitetail. Love them all. Couldn't be a more diving place to escape for a celebratory escapade. That backyard is like Provence - grapes latticed above and soft music playing in the breeze. Here's hoping for an indian summer to sit out amongst the stars again. I dream of that bed and the best sleep ever, Cathy - housekeeping star! Fondly, your #1 fan, MM

Lovely hotel. Clean rooms and quiet even though located on Main Street. Friendly and inviting staff. The dining experience was excellent. Drinks, dinner and dessert were all very tasty. We ate outside in the patio/courtyard area and it was a nice and relaxing experience. Thumbs up to the chef/kitchen staff and manager on staff that night. Everything was great!

Had a wonderful stay here! Everything was really thought through. Perfect couples trip! The towels were so fluffy and soft. The owner was lovely. She dried our ski clothes which was such a nice extra touch. I would definitely recommend staying here if you are going skiing or spending the weekend in town!

This lovely boutique hotel is so endearing. The place has a lot of history and character and the auxiliary pub and restaurant provides perfect spot for good drinks and comfort food! Overall a totally delightful experience

I was passing thru and decided to stay at the historic hotel. Such great history of James Buchanan. I was greeted by Harry, the pub owner, who got me my key and showed me around. The room was lovely, cozy, and it was nicely cleaned. It's not a modern hotel, no elevator so be sure you can climb the staircase, but had a great TV and plenty of electric outlets. The bed was very comfortable. Sadly, Main Street is very loud or maybe it was just a Friday night and all the very loud motorcycles were out racing up and down the road. I enjoyed wandering the historic town and reading the plaques on all the buildings of who lived there and what they did. Down the street is a cute old service station... brought back memories... Luckily, the hotel has a wonderful pub and restaurant attached and I highly recommend stopping in! Harry the owner, and Stewart the bartender, are great to sit and chat with and the food delicious!!
