I bought $1000 worth of snow sets from the store and unfortunately, my final experience was disastrous. I was unsure of the size of the coat for my boy, so I asked the staff for advice. I was assured that the coat would be suitable for the whole season (he wears 7 years and I am advised to take the 8 years). However, once home, I realized that it would be too small very quickly.
I went to the store less than 24 hours after my purchase, hoping for an exchange. Unfortunately, no sizes available for my boy. Too bad.. I politely ask for a refund because I will have to go elsewhere to buy him a coat.
No mention of the cause of non-refund was made at the time of purchase and, to my great surprise, I was told that it was up to me to ask the staff if the refund policy was in place here. WHAT? (yes! I made the manager repeat it) It’s simply illogical! Are we now pushing the merchant's responsibilities onto customers?
Then, I was told that the non-refund notice was written on a piece of paper… stuck on the counter, in a place where the 3 sets of coats were left (therefore covered). So, not only was I not informed of this policy, but it was placed in an inconspicuous place, which makes the situation even more frustrating.
Here is what consumer protection mentions:
Clear and visible information obligation:
The law requires merchants to inform consumers of any material terms, including a no-refund policy, clearly and conspicuously before purchase. Posting this information on a counter where customers cannot see it, or not mentioning it explicitly, could be considered insufficient.
Return or exchange policy:
Even though a merchant may have a no-refund policy, this does not mean that they can refuse to exchange a product if it is defective, if it does not match the description given, or if the product has a hidden defect. This also includes the case where the item is too small, if the store did not provide adequate information during the sale.
No understanding, no flexibility and no good judgment on their part. And I'm talking here about a $250 coat, not a $15 sale item or a 2 for 1 item.
What should you do when a single parent or a low-income family cannot afford to spend an extra $250 to buy a second coat for their child? I ask you.
The lack of customer service (phony answers) and good judgment leaves me with a bitter taste. I am really disappointed by this experience. I wanted to encourage local but will certainly not return to spend such large amounts.

Comme à chacune de nos visites, nous avons eu un service incroyable. Mais ce matin, je souhaite dire un énorme merci à Brigitte, qui a été une perle avec mes enfants. Elle est d'une patience et d'une gentillesse sans limite avec ma fille de 4 ans qui est TSA et mon petit garçon de 20 mois énergique. C'est rassurant pour des parents, d'avoir un aussi bon service!
