Thi is now the Harbor Beach Island Resort on GOAT Island.. the rooms need a bit of a refresh. The staff was great. The food was good, but not great. Still a fun place in Newport for a little getaway

Put simply, this hotel was not worth the price. We paid $3K for two nights in a bi-level suite. There was a regular bed upstairs and a sofa bed downstairs which was so incredibly uncomfortable and as bad if not worse than the name "sofa bed" sounds. The rooms in the hotel were largely out of date. The outdoor area was beautiful but the interior left much to be desired. Further, when we arrived we could not get a bell hop or anyone to help us. The only individuals who spoke to us were representatives standing outside from some car company. It was only after waiting inside for awhile that the front desk was finally able to assist; however we arrived a bit early, maybe by 30min-1hour so our room was not available. They are supposed to guarantee a room being available by 4pm, I believe, but we waited past this time in the lobby.

We came in the off season, I think it might be nicer during the summer. But we were a little disappointed because we went here on a babymoon and I splurged on this hotel thinking I was getting us some kind of luxury experience. But it wasn't and I was kind of embarrassed to answer to my husband about how we got into this situation. The hotel was actually dated and our room wasn't as nice as it looked in the photos. It was quiet and had a good view of the water but otherwise nothing special. There was no overhead lighting so the room was pretty dark, and it was freezing when we arrived. We had to call maintenance up to our room twice in the first night and we also had to go buy a blanket for our room. The couch was uncomfortable and there wasn't a coffee table. There was a coffee machine in the room but the coffee pods weren't labeled so we didn't know what was what. It's also not walkable to town in the cold so I would suggest staying somewhere in town across the bridge and it would perhaps also be nicer. We thought about leaving and going somewhere else but the idea of doing all of that and figuring out how that would break down cost wise was just too overwhelming.

We loved our weekend at this hotel. We had a wonderful experience. The office manager, Victor, was extremely pleasant and helpful. The views were spectacular, even on a brisk fall day. The food and drinks were delicious. All of the staff was willing to help, with a smile on their faces. My kids loved the indoor pool and my husband enjoyed his massage at the spa. Our post Thanksgiving trip was perfect thanks to this property and its staff!

UPDATE: I was contacted by the new property manager and we had a wonderful discussion about changes they are making to the level of quality and service of this resort (many by the end of the year).I can say now, that the room rates reflect the quality of rooms as is and that with the changes being made, the hotel will only get better. The property manager was kind and truly wanted the feedback. He went above and beyond to assure me our experience is not what other guests can expect, spoke to the Spa director, and is addressing other details as well.My main concern with quality and level of service was addressed in our conversation.//The dining spaces and views are beautiful, but there is nothing else about this “4-star” hotel I would come back for. The rooms were $900 a night, seemingly making me think I was booking a luxurious girls weekend getaway. What we got was less than a 2-star experience. The valet was rude and hurried, the reception was not welcoming nor did he describe the property for a first-time guest. I had to ask “Is there anything I should know” after my key was slid to me without a word. I finally got a few details after probing but felt it was an inconvenience for asking. The rooms are old (think low ceilings, no ventilation, and lingering smoke smell, dirty carpet) smelly, and basically an old Radisson Inn “remolded” with Poland Springs water by the bed. For this rate, I expect little extras everywhere and have honestly never encountered such a poor-quality hotel for these outrageous prices. The outdoor chairs were broken and dirty on top of it.The $25 breakfast buffet, left a lot to be desired from supposedly a top restaurant in the area, and I’m sad to say I still went to the spa after all I already described. Again, more Poland Springs water when I expected cucumber water (or really anything to give a little touch of luxury), there was mold growing in the shower, and the ceiling of the relaxation room. The massage therapist was hasty. My friend, who received her treatment after me, was burned by one of the hot stones and the same therapist said “its a problem with your skin being too sensitive.”We should have been made aware of the ownership change, and the room rate should have been changed accordingly as for the same weekend the prices were down to $330 per night (which I still would not pay for this property). The quality and service were not up to standard. Even without the ownership change, the poor quality of the rooms do not deserve a rate of even $250 per night - however, I would have been ok with it if the other areas made up for it. I’ve paid less for top 4 and 5 star hotels (recently was at the Windsor Court in New Orleans and the Spectator in Charleston). I hope the new owners are hospitality minded and add the bells and whistles a property with prices like this needs to maintain guests' experience. The one positive thing is the bar and restaurant staff were wonderful, which was common in other establishments we dined at in Newport.

We stayed at the Newport Resort and marina for my daughters wedding on Goat island. Very disappointed, the hotel rooms are very dated. We also could not get through to room service for an hour to order food for the bride and bridesmaids while they were getting ready. Not worth the expensive room price!

Wish I could rate it higher but it is what it is. Super pricey spot that is just kind of old. Dated, cramped rooms that are in need of a much needed makeover. My room was super dark, even with the shades drawn wide open. My TV was broken along with the phone. A/C was ice cold which was nice. The outdoor pool was spectacular and obviously the main draw to staying here. There are plenty of nicer places but what's the point if you're there in summer and not getting some rays and pooling. Indoor pool was hot and muggy, a little ventilation would go a long way. The staff was amazing and the food was fantastic. I brought our dog and it was totally pet friendly and super convenient. Plenty of nice grassy spots. I'd stay there again but was just expecting more for an establishment with this price. Needless to say, the views and location make it.

We came in really excited as our last vacation before our baby is born. Right from the start there were issues with the computers which is understandable. However the staffs answer was to push us to the side and help other guests first to “keep the line moving”. After that upon arriving in our room there was no toilet paper in our bathroom. The one nice thing we can say is the view of the bay was beautiful. We attempted to call to get the toilet paper and extra pillows and our phone wouldn’t work. Go to take a shower and the bathtub drains so slow you end up with water pooling over your feet. Next day looking for food ask if the pineapple club is open and serving food, told yes only to walk out and find the place boarded up. Go back to the room figuring just to order room service, phone still not working. Call via cell phone, they try to transfer me and get disconnected multiple times. Call back and they tell me “he may be out on a delivery he’ll call you back when he sees there’s a missed call”. I’m never someone to complain however for what we were charged to stay at this place I was expecting something special. It has been anything but that, and we still have a day to go.

Just returned from a weekend honeymoon at Gurneys on Goat Island and we sadly couldn’t wait to get home. Extremely negative experience. Gurneys has run this property into the ground and are no longer owner of the property/hotel in 2 weeks. Wish we knew this before booking. Beautiful location tarnished by extremely poor accommodations and state of hotel is in obvious disrepair in most areas. The rate we paid per night was outrageous and borders robbery. All the staff was basically kind, helpful and sorry for the poor conditions. They get complaints daily and morale is poor under constant, negative feedback We were told the property will undergo 40 million in renovations The caliber is currently of a Motel 6. The only saving grace is the pool area and positive dining experience. Skip the Gurney hype and hold off until massive improvements bring the property back to life ! So much potential !

Upon arrival it looks like you’re absolutely getting what you pay for and that’s where the facade ends. THE ROOMS The rooms are antiquated and terribly tended to. We paid nearly 2k for the weekend and we were only left ONE towel in the bathroom. When we called down for more we ended up waiting more than 45 minutes for additional towels. The rooms aren’t thoughtfully laid out, don’t really have anything you’d want or need to get ready for an event. The “waterfront” view, while technically was a water view, was also in a gross alley that was NOT tended to at all. FOOD The food at the resort (including at the wedding) was mediocre at best. Nothing was seasoned and everything was over cooked. We weren’t even asked how we wanted our filet cooked at the wedding. Silverware was chipped. Food took forever. No one tried to make anything better or help in any capacity. THE POOL The pool was fine but not managed well and muddy and chairs and couches looked severely untended to. OVERALL There is ZERO attention to detail in the entire resort. The absolute definition of complacency. We went for a wedding and honestly even if only paid a quarter of the price I’d still be woefully disappointed. Things were dirty and broken all over the resort. Save your money and go elsewhere.

This review is strictly for Showfish their restaurant. I was emailing with Dominic beforehand about 2 months prior trying to plan my sisters bachelorette dinner here. Through email and playing phonetag, it was really hard to get in touch with him and I had to followup several times. I told my sister for the price of their prie fixe I can't imagine this place being worth it if their customer service meant anything related to it. We did get the menu and reservation down beforehand despite the hassle. We were supposed to eat outdoors but due to it being chilly they accommodated our request to move inside which was again a pleasant surprise that they put us at this long seemingly private area dining room (surprising for a last min switch). So When we arrive day-of, I was pleasantly surprised it was a family style prie fixe menu... I had no idea but ok! You'd think I'd be told that while working with catering. We got to sample a bit of everything which was nice. I loved their calamari and their desserts. They also gave champagne out for the bride-to-be which was kind. So despite the difficult lead up, the experience itself turned out well. Just side notes for gurneys in general.. we couldn't stay here because it was way over budget.. I was sad they couldn't offer us any kinda day pass for their pool. Also couldn't get a reservation for drinks by their fire pits beforehand because reserved for hotel guests, bummer. But it is a beautiful property for sure.

Went there for a long weekend. The best thing about it is the location. Beautiful views of the bay. For the money, the room was very small. It was clean but outdated. The facility is old, worn out and not clean. We were very disappointed with the place. My husband worked in the hospitality/hotel biz for many years, and we have travelled to many hotels over the years. This place was a total disappointment. It seemed as though there was little to no management and the place was running itself. It was dirty, unkempt and needs a complete overhaul. Would not recommend this place for the money.
