The oldest synagogue in the United States, Touro Synagogue is one of many historic sites in Newport that is open to public visitors. There is a small visitor center with some information on the history of the synagogue, and where you can buy tickets for a guided tour of the actual synagogue. The tour was relatively short (about 30-40 minutes), but very informative and gave a lot interesting background. The synagogue is small but beautiful, and I really enjoyed my visit.

Very well preserved synagogue with an incredible story behind it. Meaningful visit with our guide. The place created a great learning experience about the first jewish communities in the United States. The entire compound is so well kept and the staff is warm, welcoming and very interesting. We had a memorable experience visiting the Touro synagogue.

Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the United States, is a living testament to both history and continuity. Its storied past is beautifully curated, and the presence of an ancient Torah scroll on display adds a profound layer to the experience. Remarkably, this historical landmark remains a vibrant center of worship, hosting active services that connect the past with the present. Touro's enduring legacy, coupled with its commitment to spiritual vitality, makes it an exceptional destination deserving of a resolute five-star rating.

The Touro is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States, the only surviving synagogue building in the U.S. dating to the colonial era, and the oldest surviving Jewish synagogue building in North America. Wonderful place to visit, even better to enjoy Shabbat.

Whomever gave the 1pm tour today was fantastic. I didn't catch her name. We took the Fort Adam's tour after, and it paled in comparison.

Beautiful and reverent. I am a believer in Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah who is Jewish from the line of King David. Sadly, there is a divide between our faiths (“Christian” and Jewish) when there should be no gap at all. We follow the same law of Adonai, but the “Christian” faith has taken it in a whole different direction. So many have bastardized the scriptures which is an absolute shame. I for one will remain a strong ally of the religious Jewish community (and non-religious for that matter). “Shema Yisrael Adonai eloheinu, Adonai echad”. May HaShem bless you and keep you.

Beautiful space with history and symbolism. The tour guide delivered a wonderful story of the history of the Synagogue, the people, and Newport. Nice visitor's center with exhibits that were informative, appealing, but not overwhelming.

This rating is for the tour of the synagogue. We drove 2h to make the visit with a 18 month old, paid for the visit and the guide asked us to keep the baby outside while it was raining. We are a very respectful family and would have left if there were major disturbances but here our daughter was not yelling or crying, just babbling sometimes. I did spend some time on the porch, then went back in the back of the synagogue, and the guide interrupted the tour again to ask us to get out of the synagogue where it was raining or in the visitor center. That Guide even interrupted a third time while we were preparing to leave to ask us to hasten which added humiliation to rudeness. Any family willing to tour the synagogue be aware of this discrimination and avoid losing your time to make a visit. Now this is clearly on the guide, who may be a bad apple among other guides or had a bad day, maybe the synagogue is worth visiting, but either way our experience was terrible. The desk was empathetic and gave us a refund of the fee for the visit we were not allowed to do. To the synagogue tour administration: please inform visitors of any restriction in advance and provide appropriate training to guides.
