The RISD Museum is a larger and more varied museum than it first appears from the outside, with extensive holdings across genres and time periods from ancient to modern times. It feels like several museums in one, contained within a connected old mansion and modern building that is easy and fun to navigate. The collection offers a great range with something for everyone, perfect for introducing children to art and design.
The museum is very thoughtfully curated, with a thoughtful approach to signage and exhibits. Descriptions are paired with acquisition stories, and there are galleries curated by local teens, giving a sense of the museum as a living thing. It feels very inclusive and accessible. Visitors can easily spend one to three hours viewing everything. Admission is free on Sundays and Thursday afternoons, otherwise it is twenty-two dollars for adults and twelve dollars for students. It is a must visit for anyone in Providence.
I don’t want to say too much because I went without a whole lot of preconceived notions or expectations - I don’t consider myself much of an art museum guy. Anyway, I hope you meander in as I did and wander the halls for hours until it restores your faith in humanity. Worth a visit.

It's a space that combines a modern building with a historic mansion, making the spatial layout unique and engaging. While it allows for tailored exhibitions, it can also feel like a complex maze. As a mix of an art gallery and a museum, you can enjoy a wide variety of works, ranging from contemporary art to ancient artifacts.

Probably one of the best galleries I have ever been to. It's free on Sundays!
