My daughter is in second grade and I've been fighting for help and not being heard since she was in kindergarten. Doctors recommendations and reports weren't taken into consideration and I was simply being ignored by the school. I reached out to Joanna Scocchi at the Arc with her help I am finally beginning to see some head way. She is with me every at every step, explains everything is understanding reassuring. I know i wouldn't of gotten my daughter the help she needs without the support of the arc

March 2022 by The Arc Rhode Island
In the summer of 2021 my son, a senior in high school in an IEP meeting said they wanted to keep him in that school till he was 22 years old because he was Autistic and they had not made much progress with him. Neither he nor I wanted him to sit in the same bored classroom he’d had all through 9-12 grades which we thought was ineffective education at best and never prepared him for a job or spoke to him about college. I hired The Arc Rhode who has a Full Special Education Department just focusingon providing families with trained certified advocates to help parents understand their rights and educational advocacy in schools Just bringing the Ed advocate was an entirely different experience Previously, meetings were rude hostile, when I suggested perhaps a new Therapy they said no almost immediately. Even if the district did say they would do something like add a Service they were just lying And they would not do what they promised in an IEP meeting The school district DID NOT want To pay for a “transition program “ at our Local college - it cost at lot I hired the Certified and Trained special EducationalAdvocate, we came up with a strategy to reverse their “no” to me for the last 4 years cause the advocate informed me of the law protecting children with Autism To become certified you have to take intense program on campus at William and Mary law School that showing you mastered the course and passed the Educational Advocacy exam to beCertified Our Arc RHode Island Ed Advocate went to a new meeting we Asked for and the advocate one by one methodically laid out all the Concerns we had and showed evidence that they failed to explore or write a transition or even developed any plan at 14 , taught No skills for employment (except one day took him to hotel to fold pillowcases! or daily living activities so he could live independently After laying this evidence out the school knew they had messed up and did not say NO any longer to our request he go to a gap year life skills program living on the college campus. He started In September, and is doing great With his roommates, is on college campus to become comfortable with course work and other Demands a young man experiences In college and he has the disability office support staff he uses often. I could have never done this alone! I do not understand what they were even talking about sometimes and they certainly never mentioned anything other than keep in a separate class in the same high school doing the same thing. Thanks to The Arc of RHode Island my son has a chance to succeed in his life! Always grateful, Janie C. Smithfield RI It cost the school extra money but they never prepared him during school. If I had not hired an educational advocate I would not have known I could even ask or know they failed him

Today was the most positive experience I've had in a specific discussion about my daughter. I felt supported, as well as believed and understood. The knowledge and passion I experienced in my meeting with RIAC is what has been my missing link to get my daughter support in her education. Thank you both Joanna and Cali!
