Absolutely amazing experience. We adopted a shy yet incredibly sweet dog about a month ago, and the process was amazing. They took amazing care of her to help bring her out of her shell, ensured her clean bill of health, and even gave her a bath when we decided to bring her home. River was found abandoned and terrified on a little island in the Pawcatuck River, and was rescued with great care by the animal control officer Art. Her timidness went away when she was around both him and Nikea, showing the great love and care shown to every animal in need at the shelter. Nikea was patient yet hopeful throughout our decision process, from when we initially met River to when we brought our senior dog Lucy to meet her. The excitement at the shelter as a whole when we ultimately decided to adopt her was visible and heartwarming. River came out of her shell the second we came home thanks to Lucy, and ever since she has been a sweet, goofy and energetic part of our family. Sadly, Lucy passed a week after bringing River home, and when the shelter was informed we recieved heartfelt condolences from Nikea as well as a card in the mail expressing the same sentiment from the shelter. Despite Lucy having never been housed at the shelter or cared for by its staff, they took great care to comfort us in our loss. The animals at Westerly Animal Shelter are incredibly fortunate to have these amazing officers and volunteers caring for them and ensuring they are ready to go to the homes they ultimately deserve. From the tiniest elderly guinea pig to the biggest, fluffiest great pyrenees, I'm not sure these animals could ask for a better place to guide them to their forever homes.

I cannot thank them from stand up for animals for everything they have done for my kitten. They were so caring giving him his first shot and then also when he was there to be neutered. I would suggest them to anybody that has any pet in need

Have had my big boy (an anniversary present from my husband) for 14 years. Once to a while I visit the shelter and am always amazed at the compassion I see for the animals.

Great shelter. Very caring too, we go to visit Buddy from time to time. He's a young kitty who needs a lot of help, and will they will keep him until someone adopts him. The officers are nice, too.

Kind, caring, compassionate, responsible. Every town should be as lucky as Westerly is to have a team like this caring for the pets in need.

So I think westerly animal shelter is great for all they do with helping animals but I did not like the women me and my husband spoke to on the phone. She referred to cats as “property” and that just made me feel a certain way ... when I made a comment about it she said she didn’t need my commentary ... I’m sorry but I do not view animals as property and makes me sad some people do .. they are loving animals that deserve to be adopted and be apart of families.. they are not property and shouldn’t be treated as such.. I think there is other words you can use besides “property” for the cats you have in the shelter until they get adopted. I ended up finding a wonderful nonprofit in RI to help me trap, spay, neuter, and release stray cats instead of getting help through this shelter. It is disturbing to call cats property and just want to make it known it’s not okay to think they are ! Meow <3

Very well run, clean, well funded animal shelter. The staff is caring, well trained, and honest. Adopted a dog and the transition was very smooth. All the animals were well cared for, up to date on vacations, etc.
