Independent bookstores are a treasure celebrating the importance of reading and literary education. They are the backbone for humanity and offer a safe haven of dialogue, conversation and reflection. Buxton is no different, but they take it step beyond. Buxton Books is a celebration of the value and importance of reading and writing through the lens of local authors throughout the Lowcountry. Not only do they do author events, they feature them live on Instagram live so that if you are not able to attend or do not live near downtown Charleston, you can still take part. We love that. The fine selection, perfect lower King Street location and elegance make for a charming experience. We love to celebrate Buxton Books!!!

Big Joe was an amazing tour guide - leaping, jumping and fully throwing himself on the floor all for the purpose of storytelling! Highly recommend the tour and exploring the bookstore in the meantime as it has great selections.

The book store is absolutely a gem. We stumbled in one evening after dinner and I picked up a few books— including a signed book by one of my favorite authors, Grady Hendrix! Apparently he stops in once in awhile. One book I picked up was the owner’s book, “The Ghosts of Charleston”. That led me to talk to a few of the people in the shop who were headed out on a tour related to the book. Here I am a few evenings later and I just came back from one of the tours. Simon, our guide, was fantastic! So knowledgeable and a wonderful story teller. Absolutely worth a stop in and definitely go on one of Buxton’s tours!

My daughter is a book addict. She found this quaint quiet and cute bookstore on our visit. She went in and started looking. The people were so nice they even looked up books that she had not been able to find in her other book travels. On the day we visited they were having a book signing later that afternoon but we were on a journey so we couldn't stay for it. She purchased her book and we moved on.

Great, classic independent bookstore on King Street. The staff is friendly and well read and just a pleasure to be around. Looking for a new book, just ask the staff. I could stay here all day!

In Charleston for work and as my custom for travel I always try to visit the local bookstores. Buxton did not disappoint. Great selection of books and great customer service. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

Can't express enough how awesome of a ghost tour we had with Big Joe. Not only was he extremely well versed in Charleston history but his story telling skills and passion made the tour even better. Joe also did a fantastic job of connecting with everyone in the group in between stories. Highly recommend!

Buxton Books is the quintessential independent small book store run by an enthusiastic group of bibliophiles. Our ghost tour with Big Joe was an educational and entertaining tribute to the haunting side of Charleston. Would do again…using the live photo function on my phone.

We enjoyed a ghost tour with Rhett. He was very knowledgeable about the city and its history. He was passionate and engaging. If you get the opportunity to go on a tour through Buxton, request Rhett as your guide! I do recommend Buxton for your ghost tour because they have exclusive access to certain places that other tour groups do not.Additionally, the bookstore is fantastic. They have great selections, and it's in a convenient location.

Super cute book store with a friendly staff and a great selection. I was so happy I happened to come in and find the owner’s book, The Ghosts of Charleston, which I had when I was growing up and would frequent the area. I didn’t realize that’s who owned the place. It was fun to find some signed copies hidden in the piles of the books. Then I learned of their ghost tour and had a great time partaking in that!

Cool bookstore, you definitely don't see many around anymore. They had a unique selection and their collections were well organized. I didn't think I was going to find anything interesting but walked out with 3 books. Staff is awesome, check them out and give them some love!

Our party of seven took their ghost tour. Brian was our guide and we were in for a true treat. Not knowing what to expect, we were entertained for the next hour and a half with different ghost stories in a 1 mile area. We learned so many facts about Charleston, and so many fascinating facts about the ghost who haunt the city. He was not only entertaining, but incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the facts of the ghosts. The walk is delightful and passes many historical sites. The last one being the Unitarian cemetery where Annabel Lee is buried. I highly recommend this and if possible, try to get Brian. Also, bit the book it is signed by the author and is one of the things we regret we did not buy.

Small, local shop right in the heart of the artsy area of downtown King Street. They manage to pack a lot of literature into the space, so you will likely find something interesting. A heavy focus on local authors and book readings/signings. Not much space for sitting and reading.

Must go if you’re on King Street. Beautiful and well-organized shop in the heart of downtown! Employees are friendly and helpful. They carry books of all genres for all ages. Small and mighty! And they have ‘blind date with a book’ specials; wrapped books which only give a brief synapsis at a discounted price. You could spend much time here!
