As someone who is deeply familiar with patterns of discriminatory treatment in public accommodations, what I witnessed during a recent visit to this Five Below was unacceptable.
My BLACK sister and I entered the store after work to browse and purchase a few small items. Within minutes, it became apparent that we were being viewed with suspicion — not because of our behavior, but because of our appearance. We were calm, polite, and dressed appropriately, yet subjected to visible monitoring and differential treatment.
By contrast, several white and lighter-skinned Hispanic customers shopped freely and without scrutiny. The disparate treatment was blatant.
When we approached the checkout area, no associate was available. We reluctantly used self-checkout — only for a lighter-complexioned Black associate to suddenly appear after we began scanning items. She then hovered over us until our receipt printed, pretending to “straighten” nearby kiosks as a cover for her surveillance. When I addressed her directly — twice — she ignored me. Meanwhile, two white associates stood at a distance observing the interaction but offered no assistance.
This experience was textbook racial profiling — the kind of subtle, pervasive bias that continues to plague retail environments under the guise of “loss prevention.” What made it worse was that my sister and I were placed in a no-win situation: left unattended when we sought help, then watched suspiciously once we helped ourselves.
Five Below’s management should take immediate corrective action and retrain staff on implicit bias and equitable treatment of all customers. A store’s “vibe” is only as good as the integrity of the people representing it.
Until then, the name Five Below accurately reflects their customer service — and their ethics

My post was taking down so I'll rewrite this again. Two days ago around 5pm I went into this store. It was ridiculous. Boxes piled up of stuff in the way making it almost impossible to wlk around but the biggest issue i had was the back of the store. It blocked off due to a young man throwing balls to a child back and 4th. LITERALLY the entire time i was there. EVEN after I said something to the guy they continued like they were outside. They kept throwing stuff 12ft apart from each other.. hitting stuff off of the shelves, almost hitting ppl and nobody DID anything. I motioned for my husband to not even go in the corner at all w my 2yr old bc clearly they didn't care if they hit ppl. Not to mention these girls who were clued to this mans side like they knew each other rolling dice on the floor like they were playing a game as well. IDK if he worked there or not but regardless the staff did nothing. I'll never go to this location again.
