A hidden jewel

A very impressive collection of many instruments. They have an enormous collection in which they rotate their pieces so it’s always changing. I especially loved the piano collection and was taken back with the documented history. The curator (and who acquired many pieces himself) was well versed in his knowledge of each piece and even played some pieces for us. He was helpful and enjoyed answering our questions.I might also add even the young man taking our ticket had a wealth of information to share and very helpful. We will return again.

Excellent exhibits, even for non-musical folks!! Parking is either in the Upcountry Museum lot (free) or the farther pay lot closer to the theater (free with a stamp from Sigal). There's 1 handicap parking spot in the Sigal staff lot. Without a handicap permit, we dropped our family members in the staff lot and parked in the theater lot, and enjoyed the good walk across the green.

Very nice museum. However, the experience was disappointing. Reservations had been made several weeks in advance for personal tour guide for our party of 8 on Dec 2nd. Tour guide was a no-show. Two in our party were high school musicians and more indepth explanation and discussion would have enhanced the experience. As we traveled from out of town and coordinating of everyone's schedules didn't allow for returning a different day.The front desk staff was helpful, apologetic about the oversight and comp the visit. But underwhelming visit.

Really enjoyed the exhibits. Will return to see the piano that was played by Mozart when it returns. A lot of musical history here. Well worth the admission whether you are a musician or not.

This music museum is bigger on the inside. Very impressed with the historical collection of pianos and other instruments on each level.

We always make sure whenever we visit a city or town we include a museum in our schedule. Sigal Music Museum is a must if you visit or live in Greenville and music interests you. Every minute while there was absorbed like sponges. Really impressive collection of historic pianos and harpsichords on the first floor. It was eye-opening to see the intense and dedicated work that was involved for the master craftsmen of the time to create these instruments and that they still exist today.A fun display of early rock and roll nostalgia is on the second floor. It was our pleasure to have the opportunity to talk at length with the curator who described they have a large inventory and regularly change the main floor exhibit. He went on to say how the floor above gave them an option to put up something different for patrons to see, and they decided to dedicate this space to the earlier histories of music that became great inspirations for the public.

I really enjoyed my stop at the Sigal Music Museum. The museum is a 1930s Coca Cola Bottling Company too. The museum came about when Marlowe A. Sigal's estate gave his collection away and the Carolina Music Museum was able to take the whole collection of over 700 instruments. Only about a quarter of the instruments are displayed because of lack of space. The museum focuses on the music and technology from 1775 to present day. Some of the museum is interactive but you cannot touch most of the antiques. The oldest Steinway is in the museum; harpsichords and so many pianos. The museum is on two levels and you can take the stairs or an elevator. At the moment, a special exhibit, Sound of America is taking up space on the first floor. I enjoyed learning some history through music. I liked that the museum did not focus on any specific type of musical genre but embraced them all from Blues to Jazz to Musicals to Rock to Rap to Classical to Gospel to Swing to Exotica. It was like going back in time seeing the eight track player that I used to listen to at my grandmother's place. It brought back great memories. Then seeing the walkman. I enjoyed seeing the radios and the cassette tapes I used to record music on from the radio. How things have changed. This museum is a gem and I've not seen anything like it before. I will be back to spend more time exploring.

With an excellent tea once a month, superb lectures by Dr. Tom Strange, and the best collection of antique pianos, harpsichords, and musical instruments you will find anywhere in the world, the Sigal Music Museum is an outstanding way to spend an afternoon. Breathtaking antiques in a historic building in downtown Greenville.

Yet another museum left me with my face hurting. My friend and I have been touring several museums in the past few days and they made me so happy I smiled for hours. My face is not used to that and all those muscles were not trained for it and they hurt. The two floors have very different displays. Down stairs is basically a piano or keyboard museum. The upper floor has a more varied set of displays. The biggest drawback is that I did not leave enough time. As I told my friend at one point, I could leave immediately and be satisfied or stay for hours reading all the information and listening to all the music. At least now, I can go back and visit their website for listening.

This is an excellent museum with an extraordinary collection of American pianos, organs, and harpsichords on the first floor. We were fortunate to have a private tour with Kaliyah (sp) that brought the stories behind each piece to life. She is a knowledgeable guide and the sweetest person.Upstairs is an eclectic exhibit that takes you back in time through the birth of Jazz to rock and roll, and really honors the African American artists who started it all. It was fun listening to the tracks form the different artists Lots to see and learn there. We had a great time and will be back to explore again.

The museum is part of the same complex as the library, science museum, and theater! Don't let the other buildings overshadow it. I had a great hour or so exploring the old pianos and instruments on the two floors. Loved learning about the history of music through the decades and the inventors behind it. It takes about 1.5 hours if you take your time to get through everything. It's a great way to spend the afternoon and not too far away from downtown Greenville.

A lot of pianos and history packed into this museum. The second floor was as interesting broadening to albums and other instruments that focused on home grown musicians. The building itself is unique, was a coke bottling plant as I understand. A must see if you visit or live here.

WOW! Happened upon this amazing music museum. Historical & unique music instruments in perfect condition. Mozart at age 9 played on one for the Queen of England. The staff is very passionate and knowledgeable. This is a must see.
