My '98 Dodge Ram was overheating. The needle would go up to around 260 degrees then cool off, over and over again. I put 1/2 gallon of coolant in it, which was all I had on hand, and it didn't change. I couldn't find any leaks or smell any vapors. I looked on YouTube and the mechanic said it was a sure sign of a bad thermostat. I thought about getting one and installing it, but they are a bear to replace on the 5.9 L engines. I took it to Southern and told the mechanic I needed a thermostat. He said, "What's it doin'?" I gave him the symptoms and he said, "sounds like your low on water." I told him I had already put half a gallon in, and he said, "That probably wasn't enough." He said, "the thermostats usually don't give you no trouble on these motors." He offered to put water in it, but I was close to home, so I said I'd get some 50/50 mix. I ended up putting a gallon and a half of coolant into the radiator. Then I drove the truck around for a while with no overheating problems. The needle hovered around 160-180 degrees. (So much for YouTube). He could have put a new thermostat in, knowing that wasn't the problem, and charged me hundreds of dollars, and I would have been none the wiser. I have been going to Southern for years, and he has always treated me fairly. Other mechanics I have gone to in the area either didn't fix the problem the first time or made it worse. It's great to have an honest competent mechanic in our area.

A small back woods place with all the charm of a outhouse. They over charged for the service that was rendered. And the employees were rude.
