Wife and I stayed one night while biking the Mickleson. Just a block off the trail, but still very quiet and restful. The cabin was great and we enjoyed chasing the dog. Ann was so thoughtful and her dinner recommendation was spot on. Nice to be able to walk to dinner. The next morning (very early) she met us exiting the cabin. She thought (correctly) that the bikes would be covered in dew and brought towels along for us to dry them. Who does that?! We hope to take advantage of the discounted rate for 3+ nights soon.

The hosts were terrific and very caring for our comfort and experience in Custer and the parks. Nice walking distance to restaurants and shopping. We drove and knew hot weather was coming so packed cooling clothes and tools. Our cabin was an AC controlled, small and cozy unit as expected. The kitchen served us well with breakfasts and lunches.

Shady Rest is the best place to stay in the Black Hills. I should know, I've been staying there for 10 plus years. Its owners for over 15 years are John and Anne. Its rustic cabins sit on the edge of a hill overlooking Custer City while surrounded by tall Lodgepole Pine trees. Each cabin has its own grill, which is a fun way to get to know your neighbors.
Shady Rest is only two blocks from downtown Custer City, which makes it easy to enjoy a walk into town for shopping or a meal.
Custer City and Shady Rest is the best place to stay in the Black Hills, especially during the summer. Try to find a quiet place to stay in Deadwood, Hill City, or Keystone. It's impossible. However, stay at the Shady Rest and you will enjoy quiet evenings while sitting on the porch overlooking South Dakota's best kept secret.

You cannot beat this lodging choice in the southern hills, and the manager is the best part of the whole experience.

My bride and I were out there in 1995, our 2nd trip to Custer, and, although the cabin was small, it was adequate and the view was beautiful. The one night we were there, there was a storm with air to air lightning. It was spectacular. Looking forward to coming back and, hopefully, stay again at the Shady Rest Motel.

My family and I stayed at the Hunting Lodge cabin, at Shady Rest. We were so impressed with the cleanliness, and the wonderful hospitality Ann provided to us. The cabin had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. The property grounds are well cared for, and the location is perfect to all area attractions. We will definitely be back! Thanks Ann, for everything!
