The Mammoth Site is an indoor active paleontological dig site and accredited museum, and an absolute must-see. It is the world’s largest Columbian mammoth exhibit and the largest known mammoth excavation site, featuring a fascinating sinkhole that trapped mammoths over 26,000 years ago. Visitors travel back in time walking the edges of the sinkhole, watching as fossils are prepared and curated, touring the exhibit hall, and experiencing summer programs. This place is so amazing, educational, and very interesting. It is a hands-on experience and a fascinating piece of history preserved for generations. The building is stunning, modern, clean, and meticulously maintained. The staff are exceptional, passionate, and kind, making the visit memorable and educational for all ages. The tour is informative, and seeing the well-preserved remains up close is awe-inspiring and brings history to life. While not a huge museum, it is a valuable and world-renown research center. Children and adults alike find it engaging. A minor note is that some technology interaction can be challenging for some visitors. Located about an hour from Mount Rushmore, it is a hidden gem and highly recommended for anyone interested in paleontology, history, or a unique experience. It is truly worth the visit.
