Did recon for camping next year. The prairie dogs have taken over the center. I expect they will move to margins once campground fills up in the spring. Several bison nearby. Should be an interesting experience when we come back.

If you are into primitive camping, look no further! It is a first come, first serve camp site. We set up and had to be careful not to set up our tent over a prairie dog hole. When we were unpacking the truck, a buffalo was less than 50ft from the campsite! It was neat to hear all of the coyotes are night as well! The bathroom had no plumbing, just a pit with a toilet. Plan accordingly! The campgrounds were perfect for our camping trip and the views were even better! I can’t wait to return!

The location is incredible. There are no "rooms" or "service" to rate. The camp is tidy and toliet was clean and the grassy area with covered picnic tables has prairie dogs living in it. We saw a herd of bison walking across the road driving to this spot and a single bison wandered through camp. This place is a must see!

Get there early to get a site. People come in after its full and randomly park where there is no site late into night. Toilets were clean but expect a line to use it given that it turns into a crowded free for all. Most people are quiet and respectful, but there are always the yahoos who decide to get druk and be loud.

This is by far the best camp ground I have ever been to. Not very often you can wake up with Buffalo all around and prairie dogs every where you look. That aside the bathrooms were the cleanliness ever. I would give it 10 stars if possible. Excellent!!!

Fills up by dark (late July). Lots of fearless Prairie dogs. Be careful of setting up over a hole. Bring enough water, it's a dry campground. Edges of tenting area by road get super muddy after a rain. Buffalo roam the area. Coyote's yipping at night. Pit toilets were super clean. Some sites have covered picnic tables otherwise, no shaded sites. All sites pretty equal in appeal. No cell service (Verizon). Great star gazing. Thunder storms although short, can be severe.Walkability: Buffalo trails lead to the river.

This campground is incredible. Right in the middle of Badlands National Park, you are surrounded by an amazing landscape and wildlife and at the night the Milky Way is so bright you can take a photo on your phone of it. Walking through the trails was like being in the video game Breath of the Wild. Grasshoppers and prairie dogs everywhere! The Buffalo do roam around -and through - camp. Kind of cool and terrifying - Don’t be stupid when they come close.Back country camping is allowed. This is definitely a good place to park your vehicle and backpack in. Dispersed camping is free - there are about 25 sites. The registry for dispersed camping is at the head of the main loop, across from the first pit toilet. The registry for back country camping is at the back of the loop, near the second pit toilet.

Wonderful primitive campground. Spots are first come first serve. Vault toilets and no running water. Many people set up tents, sleep in vehicles, or even set up a place to sleep directly under the stars. Many walking and horse trails in the area, which other wildlife uses as well. One male bison was at camp in the morning, grazing and minding his business. It is rut, though, so approaching him is even less recommended than usual.MOST IMPORTANTLY: make sure to stargaze while you're here. The view is unlike anywhere else. There is no light pollution, so you will see more stars here than almost anywhere else in the country.Noteworthy details: There are no cabins, running water, or amenities. This is for the camper who wants a rustic experience.

Clean campsite, lots of friendly campers. Plenty of room. There are no reservations but you’re nearly guaranteed a spot and can squeeze in wherever. Beautiful hills to hike up, proximal to the creek, and there are prairie dogs everywhere.

We rolled into this *free* campground once it was already dark. Most of the campers were settling in for the night. There are two pit toilets (enclosed restroom with actual toilet seat) and places for trash/recycling right by it.Some of the sites have the sun shade for the picnic benches, others do not. There are prairie dogs all over, watch your step for their holes when setting up!Beautiful place to watch for shooting stars. I think our groups favorite part was waking up to the sunrise and sound of bison- we hadn't seen one on our trip yet.. saw one as we walked up the hill and then found the entirety of the herd. The bison made their way across the prairie, one came into the camp and enjoyed using the wooden post to scratch himself.Tent camping went without a hitch!

If you're looking for something way out in nowhere this was beautiful. You can see the stars so well at night. A bison showed up in the middle of the camp in the morning. There are an insane amount of grasshoppers in July and you won't get much cell service, but it was peaceful. We got there at about 9pm and it was nearly full, we had to squeeze our tent in but made it work. Take a walk up the hill to look down on camp

Great spot to camp for free in the national park! Lots of buffalo and prairie dogs around. Vault toilets were nice, trash and recycling available, no potable water. The covered picnic tables are great for shade but not great for rain. Will definitely camp here again.

Ranger came thru a couple times. But never checked anyone's registration. Rule followers drove thru looking for a spot, they were full so they left. Rule breakers made their own spot or made themselves at home on someone else's. Which ones had a place to sleep?
