Beautiful hotel, the renovation is superb. The hotel staff is very friendly, helpful, and accomodating. I would definitely recommend this hotel! The history of the hotel is very interesting and amazing!

Only issue with staying downtown, is the car noise at night. The hotel was wonderful, but you can hear loud cars, and fire/rescue/police cars throughout the evening.

We stayed at Read House in October 2024. A bit of a change from our usual pick of hotels based on my credit card/program rewards. The location is right in the middle of downtown Chattanooga, surrounded by locally-owned restaurants and shops. The hotel itself feels like a step back in time. Not old, but elegant like it was in the 1930s. We had a King Premium room on the 8th floor. A business event was going on, so it was relatively crowded, but our room was quiet.
The staff was helpful. The bartender was genuinely friendly as were the people at the desk, the bellhops or valets, and hostesses at the bar. There's a billiards room behind the bar in what used to be a Speakeasy.
Pretty much everything is walkable from the hotel. A deli across the street, a nicer restaurant down the street, and a really cool pizza place that was packed with people on a Tuesday night.
And don't miss the ghost story/tour of room 311. It's complimentary and led by a local volunteer who clearly loves his job and is a great storyteller.
A TLDR review I know but I can't say enough good things about the hotel, downtown Chatt, or the trip overall.

My biggest complaint was that the hotel only had two elevators and one of the elevators was broken. We were told by two bellhops and one person at the front desk that the elevator had been broken for two weeks. Not only did all the patrons of the hotel now just have one elevator to use the hotel staff (including the staff with the carts) only had this elevator to use as well. The elevators were also very small - probably a maximum of 7 average sized people. I understand they were built long ago so I can look past the size part.
We often had long waits to use the elevator and the elevator was often pretty jammed - which is not good for my mother a 85 year old claustrophobic. The elevator wait was often long. Especially on Sunday when so many people were checking out at the same time.
When I went to the front desk and voice my complaint the lady said that the elevator is old and sometimes it takes a while to get parts. I told her that every part should be on hand. What would happen if the second elevator went out with the same issue. Would those of us in our party (several which were over 65 and some in 80;s and 90's) have to walk up multiple floors all day long? Two weeks is way too long to wait for such a vital part of the hotel operation. The lady behind the desk also did a poor job of being empathetic - she seemed the opposite - aloof and uncaring. With taxes we were paying $290 a night and at that rate the elevator should be fixed immediately or a discount should be offered to patrons.
Rooms were large, comfortable, quiet and clean. Tubs were in very rough shape and several small issues around the room. Valets were fast and polite.
Rooms: Rooms were large, quiet and comfortable. The tubs were chipped but water pressure was great.
It could have used a larger fridge - it was dorm sized. Heat/AC was a unit on the outside wall like at a cheap hotel. I imagine they can't upgrade easily due to the age of the hotel.
Nearby activities: Children's Museum, Aquarium and other spots were definitely in walking distance. Some nice restaurants were just a block or two away.
Safety: Inside the hotel was very safe. Outside it seemed safe - but there were about 8 of us in our party walking at the same time so I never felt unsafe.
In the morning I was asked by two homeless people for money. They seemed harmless.
Walkability: We walked to the riverfront and to the aquarium without any issues.
Food and drinks: Drinks at the hotel were priced fine. $5 for a domestic beer. $15 for a martini.

This is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve stayed at. I love history and I love the early era beauty of buildings built during that time way more than the modern. Every room in The Read Hotel has this quality and I loved walking around and taking pictures. The many different seating areas was an added pleasant experience. They have a beautiful swimming pool with a waterfall feature. It is situated in an area of shopping and you can walk outside and just begin strolling and shopping. The young men at the valet station were engaging and personable. They helped us with question about how to get places we wanted to go.
The only complaint I have is I was expecting one of the beautiful rooms shown in the pictures and we were placed in a very bare bones room that had no decor, desk, chair. We had a dresser and refrigerator on the floor.
This was our 50th Wedding Anniversary so I was truly disappointed in the room we were given. I should have requested a different room but while we were there two weddings were going on and I knew there would be no rooms to change us to.
We will definitely go back and I will just make sure that we receive one of those beautiful rooms!
Walkability: There is so much to experience all around you as soon as you walk out of the hotel. There are restaurants, dessert shops, or anything you are looking for within walking distance of the hotel.
Food and drinks: We didn’t get to experience the food this time around but the people we came into contact with were telling us that it was wonderful.

Great location and services. Had a conference at the convention center (5 min walk) and was able to check in early which allowed me to dump my things before attending the first session. Room was clean and large, valet, key card, and elevator all worked as expected and the service in the bar (food only) was excellent. Would stay again.
Rooms: Room was large, clean, and fresh towels were delivered the next day which is unusual since COVID days.
Walkability: 5 min walk from the convention center on one side and the shopping marketplace area on the other.

Pros: location, spacious room & valet service
Can't beat the location near where everything is located & right off of highway. Room is big & has an ample space enough for family of 4. And valet service staffs were very professional & nice it just takes time to bring the car around even when there's no wait.
Cons: room is old & dingy
We stayed in one of the stand room in the section of the hotel called Manor. Its hallway to elevators was dingy old & smelly. My kids called "poop bleach" scent. Room is big as stated above but one major problem we had was there was a big crack(sharp hard edges) in the bathtub where you can cut yourself if you slip (see attached photos). I don't mind for outdated aesthetics as long as it's not healthy hazard.
We have another reservation in December for a suite but I don't know whether we want to go back.

This was my husband's and my first visit to Chattanooga, the State of Tennessee and the exquisite, historic Read House. We were not disappointed with the location, the tower room that we stayed in and the dining at Bridgeman's Chophouse Restaurant. Finish off your dinner with a dessert drink created by bartender Alan -- his signature cocktail The Peanut Butter Alan. What a treat. Also the servers that work at Bridgeman's Chophouse are warm, friendly and care about their service and it shows.
Thank you very much for a fantastic experience.
Rooms: Beautifully period decorated yet modern rooms. Quiet and comfortable.
Walkability: Chattanooga is a super easy downtown to get around and The Read House is perfectly located to venture out and see the sights.
Food and drinks: The experience of eating at the bar at Bridgeman's Chophouse was not only enhanced by Bartender Alan but the other wonderful guests we met and chatted with. The environment created a friendly atmosphere to foster a fun evening. You must try a Peanut Butter Alan drink to round out your evening, especially if you are a Reese's Peanut Butter candy lover.

It's a stunning hotel with stellar service. My room was cozy with comfortable sleeping. The hotel is within walking distance to shopping and restaurants. Starbucks on the 1st floor was busy but very efficient and friendly. I didn't get a chance to experience the dining, but I will certainly make time in the future. 10/10 highly recommend!
Noteworthy details: A glass of champagne upon arrival was a really nice touch for this weary traveler.

Very nice hotel for the price and location. Loved that it was very walkable . The rooms were really clean and the beds were comfy. The restaurant was good but not the best steaks we ever had. The lounge in the lobby the drinks were really good along with the apps.

The Read House is an absolutely fabulous hotel, rich in history, and the most beautiful place! The staff is so friendly and attentive. The hotel is literally sparkling it's so clean. The rooms are gorgeous and the views beyond amazing! And you don't even need to leave the property for a fantastic meal! The Read House is the only hotel we'll stay in when visiting Chattanooga!
