So convenient to have a place where you can grab something to eat out here without traveling to town. Very friendly.

Well, so long, Country Corner. In your place, they've paved a parking lot. There's a new place, farther up the road. There they've swept the traces of Country Corner clean away, and with them a piece of my heart. No longer is the lady with the missing tooth, eager to take my order. No longer is the farmers hunched over hot biscuits or spaghetti. The foods are fried at some unpeopled hour and left under lamps all day. Crisp has given way to chew, heat to tepidness, flavor to flub. There is an invisible sign here that wards away souls like a rotting skunk. They've taken the short-order cooks and replaced them with languidly-smiling, busy, multi-tasking, multi-purpose, efficient and modern-day cashiers. They've taken the dining-tables and replaced them with....well, asphalt I suppose. A big black expanse designed perhaps to let dump trucks cut through like star-destroyers. Not even a single, splintery, sun-bleached picnic table to speak of. I suppose we're to eat on the condiments bar? "Nope, it's just most people, well, they eat on the road now."
