The Gray Fossil Site, located at Hands On! Discovery Center, is a place where visitors can get up close with an active fossil dig site. Scientists believe that the site was formed by an underground limestone cave that collapsed and created a sinkhole. This left a vast fossil deposit that dates back 5 million years. Hundreds of plant and animal fossils have been unearthed so far including: saber tooth cat, alligator, tapir, rhinoceros, short-faced bear, red panda, and a 10-ton mastodon.
Absolutely worth a visit especially for little ones

My daughter loves this place! She tells everyone we meet about it. It was her favorite vacation stop in the past few years, even beating our beach trip, according to her. They do offer discounts for homeschool families too, so make sure to bring an ID card if you homeschool.

Never thought I'd find ice age fossils in Tennessee, this place was really cool to see. The kids had a blast and really enjoyed their grammaw taking them around the place.
