It’s a shame I can’t give zero stars. I don’t know where to begin. Well I got there and was detoxing from heroin horribly. Steve told my mom I could rest and recover which of course was a lie. Steve would punish you for smoking a ciggerette by digging a5x5 ft hole from 10pm-1am. Then back up at 5:00…. Also the food came from a guy in gatlinburg that owned a llama ranch. The guy had 50 gallon buckets of food donated for his animals and we would dig through the buckets to find stray packages of meat that weren’t torn or piping hot. Steve told me I was “taking my blood pressure medicine to get high.” I managed the thrift store and Steve would show up (obviously high) and ask me for all the cash the store had made that day (sometimes $4-500). He kept thousands of dollars just lying around in his car. A lady asked me if I needed any “ice” and when I said no she asked for Steve… I went to phase 2 just so I could work and save 2 paychecks. I ended up saving $600 and just walking off the property and getting a bus back to Nashville. I’d rather have spent the 5 months in jail. I’m actually writing a book about my experience there along with another person who went to the female facility. You will go in as an addict, and want to use the second you get out to cope with the P.T.S.D . YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

This is my 2nd review because for some reason the first one has disappeared. I went to U Turn for Christ in Tennessee several years ago and this was the most horrifying place I have ever been to. Every negative thing that you read, hear or experience about this place is true. While I was there, I think less than a week I experienced so much evil going on by staff and others residents of whom were homeless or sent by a judge. They even said that the only reason they were still there was because they didn't have any where else to go or didn't want to go back to jail for not finishing the program. Now one day I over heard one of the staff members telling one of the guys that had completed the program that he had to leave a very positive, encouraging review or he would not get his certificate for completing the program. The guy said after he did so that the staff member said now make up a fake profile and leave one more and I'll give you your certificate. So for what it's worth , please I beg you not to send anyone or go there yourself. It's not a good place at all.

I was there in 2006 to 2007. It was a blessing being apart of this ministry serving and being served by others in the same grip of addiction. If you truly want to change your life I highly recommend this program or another program just like this as it will change your life !

As a mom, this place is awesome. It has new leadership and is the only place that has made a difference in my son's life. Is it easy? Absolutely not! But nothing in life worth while is easy.

It’s been almost 10 years since i’ve been in this program. I still suffer from PTSD. I had to literally escape from this program . I chose this rehab because it was affordable and boy was that a bad idea . I could literally write a novel about this place . I want to warn people not to send your kids to this place . In the end I ended up having the strength within to stay sober and have been sober for 8 years now . Let’s just say my current church is appalled by the way U turn operates. U turn ia very much a cult and is a very dangerous place. When they drop you off at the greyhound bus station in johnson city tennessee the employees there know all about it . I also gave a statement to the news station and the police .

1) If you are looking to beat addiction, this is NOT the place. Ironically, it is a trap house to keep you trapped in this program. As a working professional struggling with addiction my wife asked me to seek help. Steve did his best to push/coerce/control me into attending phase 2. If I did not leave, in phase 2 I would get a local factory assembly line job, live in a trailer on-site and walk to work. Why would I do this when I could return to my wife and 120K+ job? How is this healthy? 2) As noted in another review, this U-Turn location is a labor camp to benefit Steve Nordgren. 3) The lodging/facilities are disgusting. 4) The food cooked for participants is donated by some weird guy in Gatlinburg that owns a miniature animal zoo (think llamas, etc.). This guy gets expired food from Walmart/grocery stores to feed his farm animals; what he doesn't want he donates to U-Turn. To get the food, Steve sends two participants in an unsafe, broken-down vehicle to pick up the food at this guy's zoo. With no supervision or barely enough gas to get there, recovering addicts are left to the open road to "figure it out." We had to beg for money at gas stations to get enough has to get back. 5) Participants are not led by trained/licensed professionals, they are led by former addicts/participants that have stay on-site and committed to long-term to the program. These are often the worst of the addicts, i.e., the participants that don't trust themselves to no relapse outside of such a controlled environment. As they are overseeing men out of addiction (allegedly), they are still trying to beat their demons/addictions. Not a recipe for success. 6) While there is a focus on the Bible, the internal process was lacking structure and disingenuous. 7) If you become a participant and feel the program is not the right fit for your recovery, Steve will not provide your personal belongings (wallet, cell phone, etc.) taken at the time of check-in. Instead, you are left to hitch hike and figure out a way home with zero resources. Seems more like a hostage situation vs. a treatment program. 8) They will allow you to write letters to your family, but read your letters and control the mail. If they don't like the letter, it won't get mailed. How kind is that to the other side of addiction - the suffering spouse, parents, children? My wife drove up mid-day during week 5 and took me home. 9) The only thing that I can say positive about the program is a sincere thank you to the sweet people that volunteer their time/resources to UTurn in the Greenville, TN community. Thank you for the random potluck meals.

This place is very extreme. Forced to dig holes in the dark as punishment, using pick axes, with no lights. Forced to wear “silence vests” where you can’t speak or be spoken to for days. The men do handyman/landscape jobs around town, in exchange for “donations” (not donations, it’s payment for the work) which go to Pastor Steve, to pay for his large house filled with wonderful new toys. It’s essentially a labor camp, where the men aren’t compensated for their work, under the guise of “rehab”, but the only rehab/program is reading some Bible passages and prayer. This place is miserable. They deny basic medications. IT IS NOT A REHAB. IT IS A LABOR CAMP WITH “prayer”. Please understand that before going - better yet, don’t go at all.

I'm a 10000% believer in Christ and he can make a way in all situations...with that being said, before coming I was never told they don't give rides to work even after the 2months,that's like tossing fire on a situation that's already high anxiety. Then I decided to leave and was pretty honest and straight forward then left me to get my stuff, already knowing I was going to be homeless after and made me get a cab to get it. Kinda think this place is a cult. Thank God for a stranger at a gas station otherwise I would have probably froze to death last night.

I did u turn for Christ in Pennsylvania Lebanon . We went out to u turn for Christ bbq in Tennessee. I loved the place. Was beautiful , nice people was friendly. Good food. ( In u turn I see family and people say it's a cult when they was rebellious and not wanting to follow treatment rules .) I know I was rebellious myself not wanting to follow all the rules . I got weighting assignments and had to dig holes . That was not a cult that was life changing . I go to a chur h I'm still clean I visit u turn once month and encourage the guys . God's good and he used program in a mighty way I loved it .

U-Turn for Christ Tennessee helped save my life. I thought I had an addition problem, but since I started living for God, my life has never been so good. This ministry is a blessing, highly recommended.

Uturn for Christ is NOT like every other substance abuse program. It maintains the focus on Christ and greatly implements the Word of God at its center. This program keeps everyone invested and accountable for their own actions. If you are looking for easy and to come out unchanged, this blessing may not be for you.

at first i disliked the program , mostly because it went against what i was familiar with , and what i was comfortable with. Today i willingly serve this program even when its not required of me. I believe in U-turn , and thank God everyday for giving me this oppertunity that has drastically changed my life.
