I pulled into this convenience store after work one night with the intention of purchasing gas, cigarettes, and a fountain drink. I walked over to the fountain drink machine grabbed a cup and dispensed some ice. It was only then that I noticed they were out of diet Coke. I typically don't buy bottles of soda at convenience stores because they're so horribly overpriced, but in this case I decided to go ahead and get a bottle of soda since they didn't have diet Coke in the fountain drink machine, and sugar is not an option for me. The clerk rang up my soda and told me it was going to be $3.50. I questioned why it was so much. He said the cup of ice was $0.75 and then, with the bottle of soda, it comes out to $3.50. I've run into this issue before at other convenience stores and usually the store will either give me the cup of ice complimentary or I have even had stores charge me for a fountain drink but give me the bottle of soda for free. I tried to appeal to the clerk's sense of customer service, but he told me that this is what they were told to do because the styrofoam cups are, apparently, inventoried. I have never run into a store that was out of the fountain drink I needed and tried to charge me full price for a couple of ice and a bottle soda. At that point I decided to just wait until I get to the next town. I realize it seems like a nominal amount to argue about, but it's the principle of the matter. Not only did the store lose the rest of the sales that I was going to purchase that night, but they also lost a customer, and, to boot, because I had already put ice in the cup they ended up having to waste the cup as well. Whatever member of management came up with this idea should probably rethink it. If I am willing to purchase a bottle of soda full price (which I can get a three liter at a grocery store for the same price) to solve the issue that they were out of their only diet option as a fountain, the least they could do was comp the cup of ice. Nothing against the clerk. He was very professional and was only doing his job.
