About Sam Houston National Forest - Double Lake Recreation Area
Sam Houston National Forest - Double Lake Recreation Area is a peaceful and scenic destination ideal for camping, hiking, biking, swimming, and fishing. Visitors often see deer near the parking area and enjoy the quiet, serene atmosphere. Dogs are welcome but cannot swim where there are yellow tubes; however, they can swim elsewhere in the lake. The park offers a variety of camping options, including spacious sites with views of the lake, some with electricity, and rustic sites without power. Campsites can be reserved in advance or chosen upon arrival, and there are picnic tables, barbecue zones, and restrooms nearby.
The park features a paved trail around the lake, perfect for a family-friendly hike or a relaxing walk, and additional biking and hiking trails are available for exploration. A small, clean swim beach with restrooms and picnic tables makes for a great spot to relax and enjoy the water. The lake's water level varies, creating new shoreline opportunities for exploring. There are also multiple fishing piers and plenty of natural beauty to admire.
While the overall environment is quiet and calm, some amenities like bathhouse showers may occasionally be out of service. Visitors appreciate the friendly hosts, well-maintained sites, and the chance to enjoy outdoor activities in a beautiful setting that has become a favorite for families and nature lovers alike.
Amazing experience! Would def. go again in fall! It was so calm and relaxing! Kids enjoyed the timeout in nature away from the hustle and bustle of city and everyday routine.

It's great for RV. Summer to hot and humid to tent camp though. One person with a portable AC could get by.

The Lilly Pads are overtaking the water, but it is so beautiful.
