My mother, daughter and I were passing through on our way to Fredricksburg yesterday for a Mothers Day trip and had a hard time finding somewhere to eat. Now we realize that it was a God thing. After googling and calling to see if they were open, we headed over. They met us at the table with a cup of beans right off the bat - which was great because by that time we were starving! We are huge buiscut and gravy girls so that is what we all got and they did not disappoint. I also had a side serving of their cranberry and stuffing with some lemon pie to go. Not only were we unanimous in CP being the best restaurant food we have had in a while, but the women there made you feel like family. This will now be our go to when out this way.

This place was a real shock - a throw back to the blue plate special when it was really special. The downtown cafe everywhere once offered tea or coffee with lunch and a simple dessert for one price. If you wanted soda they were per-each. It was an industry standard up into the 80’s when the soft drink companies came calling and convinced most everyone to raise the price of coffee and tea up with soft drinks then offer the customer all they can drink for one ridiculous price; today about $3.00. In my case, it backfired in their face. I don’t buy drinks any more because I don’t want a washtub full, and I don’t want carry out. I’d still buy a reasonable portion at a reasonable price but that’s gone. Everyone in the business (almost) took off on this ticket padding direction on drinks and the blue plate would never be the same again. This place is brand new and they are not buying into that. This was a gas station not many years ago, and when one walks in it has a touch of feeling boxed in. The service is courteous and efficient and their food was very good. I got fried fish and slaw and they bring the guest a complimentary half-serving of pinto beans for an appetizer. I just don’t like pinto beans, and when they put that much salt in them I won’t touch it, but the gesture is certainly welcoming. The tiny portion of sheet cake after the meal is a perfect finishing touch. I was told they are open for breakfast. If there is anything that community needs is more choices of table service breakfast. I’m not down there that often but I can’t wait to see if they are better than the other offering in town - which would not take a lot. I’ve been in the area for over half a century and that building rose to sell gasoline and bait to the in-rush of recreational users when the lake was new. The new has worn off and there isn’t that much traffic out there any more. There has been food service out there on and off for years, but they don’t live that long. One has to be a little bit crazy to want in the cafe business in the first place. I was really impressed with this considering where it’s located and who they are trying to serve. It’s not elegant, and there’s nothing fancy about a sheet metal barn but they are delivering good food to the blue collar customer and I hope they stay there a while. The gas pumps are gone and there’s a bathtub in their place for those who want to get cleaner. I’m sure the EPA took the fuel storage tanks in the 90’s, but the building still holds many great memories.
