Think Night Court, think basement cafeteria, think I have to eat food in a building I would rather have no business being in. Nick's is GREAT! When you find yourself dealing with scum-of-the-universe lawyers going underground and caffeinating, rehydrating, or eating a quick meal at Nick's is a blessing.

Avoid as much as possible!!! Unfortunately this is the closest venue to get coffee, breakfast or lunch when U are called to jury duty . Do your best to avoid this cafeteria. It's the worst! U can try to go to another restaurant on the street level, but Ur going to end up taking more time that U don't have, because the court only gives U enough time to go downstairs grab something quick and be back at the court room. So basically the whole time Ur there Ur an unwilling participant in a social experiment. The lady at the register gives so much attitude and wants to charge u for everything, even a coffee refill. She has an entitled attitude, totally non-deserved. The manager isn't much helpful either. The food is salty and service is lousy. Be prepared, they do cash only, suspicious , and they don't give U a receipt . Either they are not reporting exactly what the business is making to the IRS, or they are not paying their fair share of taxes. the ATM machine, in the cafeteria, will charge U $3.00 to withdraw money from Ur account. So if U don't have cash available, a cup of plain coffee will end up costing U $5.00, that's including the ATM fee.

OK, I only went here because it was the only choice during my lunch during jury duty. Oh, and it's in the basement. So I had very low expectations going into it. This place turned me around! OK, first, I have to say, it's a greasy spoon. With the hand written signs, and random special boards posted around. It really felt like a divey diner. I had the Greek Combo. The Greek Combo is a gyro sandwich and a Greek salad. The sandwich meat was good, slightly grilled and was as good as any deli variant and it had fresh seeming tomatoes and lettuce. However, it the tziziki sauce had to have been from a tub, I scraped most off. The Greek salad was actually good, keep in mind where I am reviewing from (so don't expect a high end restaurant salad) but as good as any I've had in a diner. Everything considered, I'll come back again next year during jury duty, unless I'm at the other courthouse.

It's diner food so don't go in with extremely high expectations. If you have jury duty at least you have a dining option with several made to order selections. It's a cafeteria line and then they likely will have some pre-made sides waiting, but it looks like most items are made in the grille area right in front of you. I caught the tail end of breakfast (served until 10:30) and got a $3.50 "lite breakfast" plate which included a freshly made pancake, an egg, and a choice of bacon or sausage patty. I splurged and added a side of hash browns for $1.75. Overall pretty tasty. The pancake was really nice and fluffy. Hashbrowns were not quite as crisp as I like them (only crisp on one side). The line moved really quickly. A guy behind me ordered 2 breakfast burritos which sounded good. I think they have sausage, hash browns and maybe eggs- I would try that next time and probably get a pancake on the side. Pleasant surprise while I did my civic duty.

I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and carrots. It was delicious and inexpensive. They had a lot of other options for different tastes. Service was fast and friendly.

Had the chicken salad with lettuce and tomato on wheat. Super fresh and VERY reasonably priced. My sandwich elicited approving remarks from my fellow jury members and table mates and tasted great. Nick, the proprietor, was working the register and was very friendly and appreciative of our business. Definitely check it out.

Fantastic Greek cafeteria in the basement of the George Allen Courthouse. I've eaten here when I didn't have any business at the courthouse. I usually get the grilled tilapia with two sides and a roll for about $6. I know lots of people who've eaten here, and they all love it. The judges often here during lunch. Nick has owned it for decades and is often manning the grill. Employees are friendly, and service is very quick. If you have jury duty, go here. Inexpensive, high-quality food.

Had jury duty today. On break went down to Nick's and enjoyed the gyro , which was very tasty and under $5.00. I'll definitely be back and have something to look forward to next jury duty. The cook told me he hand breads the chicken fried steak.

Enjoy a visit this cafeteria in the basement of the George Allen Sr Courts Building if you happen to get jury duty, or if you just need a bite downtown. This place is operated by the same guy (Nick) of the historic Record Grill just a couple of blocks away, and he brings the same spirit of good food and low prices. I would have a meal here even without jury duty.
