Understand that my stay with Genesis was 12 years ago. I found them after being released from a 21 day inpatient stay at a Dallas Rehab facility, and had no other option. They welcomed me, gave me shelter, food and was there for me when I desperately needed a place to land. However, after obtaining my degree in mental health counseling, some things about the Center still haunt me. Again, this was 12 years ago, so I pray that things have changed. They signed me up for food stamps, which they had total control over. I signed the paperwork, but never saw the card or got it back when I left. There was absolutely no counseling other than the constant zealous religious teaching you're forced to participate in. I did sign up for what I thought was a support group for those of us who had terminated a pregnancy. Very much not the case. For WEEKS we sat in a room with two women who were Right to Life and the curriculum covered the size of the embryo at certain stages, and just to bring it home, they passed around these tiny rubber fetuses that showed the size of your fetus the week you terminated. What???? I am still mentally scarred from that. It's very much a Right Wing agenda. It was an election year and you were highly motivated, chastised if not, to register to vote....republican. They actually bussed everyone to vote! We were preached to that Halloween was an evil holiday that in no way should be celebrated. Our small children who were just in it with no agenda whatsoever, would be going against God. I was forced to attend worship services at other churches, didn't matter what your beliefs were prior to your stay. I was Baptist at the time and had NEVER experienced people falling out in services and being covered in blankets all over the floor of these churches. NEVER worshiped with people speaking in tongues and was literally forced onto a stage with a female inches from my face trying to "teach" me how. I could go on, but I want to speak on the actual treatment of myself and the other women who were there during my stay. You're allowed one phone call a week, when you reach a certain level, which is supervised. I sat a table in a tiny office across the desk from a woman who literally dialed the number and listened to every part of my conversation. The numbers you called had to be cleared with the Center. A woman who I got close to was literally put out instantly after making a call to an number not cleared and put out at the "picnic table" with all her belongings. We watched her sit on that table ALL day and into the night until we heard she just took off walking because they were locking the gate that night. The "picnic table" was why you stayed in line with what they asked of you. We were there because we didn't have a place to go, and one seemingly small infraction you would be gone. Another instance and young mother and her three children were put out. The women and I watched on our way to work or church service, as she sat there with everything she had until she was picked up. This, to me, was TRAUMATIZING. Like I said, I pray things have changed. You sign up for a year long stay. I lasted eight months. My precious Mom, who has since passed, was hospitalized in Dallas and I never went back. Don't volunteer or give funding to ANY organization until you do your research. Women deserve better, I deserved better.....

Make sure it’s something that’s usable for anybody that goes there. That shops can use it. They also donate to battered women and childrenusually a good place to go ahead and take donations. They are reasonably priced in their thrift center. They accept all donations within reason. I always go there to donate and to buy what I need for the holidays or other people I know God bless and be safe

They have cut prices at the thrift store!! I have worked with Genesis over the years and they have been my go to when working with women in need of assistance. The new director is amazing and a God send to Genesis. I met with a graduate of the program who had all great things to say. I was surprised how clean everything is. Immaculate! Genesis has a huge heart in everything they do, Glory to God! I would say greater plans are ahead for Genesis and anyone who plans to stay here will feel welcomed, loved and have the opportunity to build a bright future and one that last forever. ?

Prices are ridiculously high now. They search prices on eBay and other such sights to price items. Not a place for people who just need good prices anymore.
